Barbara,

please buckle your seatbelt and hold on tight - this may be a bumpy ride for someone with your greenthumb to take in at one setting - I was going for a wildflower cottage look when I started but after 3 weeks in Fla and 2 weeks of being busy it has become more of an abandoned weed patch look Not to mention we locked ourselves out of the house and my son had to break in and hadn't put the screen back in b4 I took the picture...

I worked like a corgi on the weed patch ALL morning - the weeds are gone now. All that's left is to remove a small bush next to the house (man job!) and to put down a heavy layer of mulch. Next spring will plant some new flowers that will bloom all summer - any suggestions?

Please Barbara let's not have Corgis in the Attic till early spring! LOL it's toooo hot to craw up there to clean My next project is stripping the wallpaper off the kitchen and utility rooms and paint them....

Try some Cleome a/k/a as "spider Plant" They are Annuals not perennials - get about 3 ' tall, come in purple, pink and white - they have prickers on them though; however, the rabbits never touch them.

I do have Hydrangeas also, I love those.

My hydrangia isn't growing well where I have it now - full sun - and going to replant it to the shady garden when it cools down a bit. I'm thinking Corgimom's cone flowers would look nice - I have the large rose bush, lilys, iris, columbine, bee balm, sun drops and spring bulbs now - so spring is covered just need late summer plants...

When I was clearing the weed patch I moved all the plants I removed to the shady side of the house - have been working on making a stone path and shady garden for the whole area because grass doesn't do well there. I went out this morning to water and everything I had transplanted yesterday had been dug up!!! Who would have don't this??? It's a head scratcher for sure...

T-Gal,

Try a perennial called Pink Turtlehead for a late summer flower. - they get about 3 feet tall(They are sturdy and don't need staking.) they like partial sun(best with sun in the morning and then afternoon shade), and they do like plenty of water, but are very pretty.

Mine are just starting to open up.- I will see if I can post a picture.

Here are some flowers that continue to bloom into fall.

the first one is Pink Turtlehead - gets about 3 feet tall, doesn't need staking, but likes lots of water. Prefers morning sun and afternoon shade. Really just
starts to bloom now.

the second one is Oranges and Lemons Blanket Flower which likes full sun.

The third is a butterfly bush which also likes full sun

Maybe you are familiar with these already

Linda

It is very pretty and I like the fact that it withstands wind with no staking.

It is also called Chelone lyonii (Pink Turtlehead) and would do well also where
summers are cool and like I mentioned, does love moisture. Good Hardy perennial.

I am wondering T-Gal and Barbara, do you have any "Hardy Hibiscus"; looks like the tropical one, but is the perennial that survives winter temps? I think they are zone 4, but the flowers are as big as dinner plates. Have you seen those? They would be also a late bloomer, starting to bloom now, unless it was a super hot summer, may start earlier. I don't have any because the plant itself gets about 5' tall and quite bushy(and I have no where to put one) and the flower only lasts 1 day, but there are lots of them with a new one opening each day.

My dad has these and they are beautiful and he gets lots of people stopping buy to take pictures.

I have had tropical hibiscus and love them - just hate they die in the winter seems such a waste of a great plant. The 2nd pic looks a little like a plant I've had b4 but we called it a "tick weed" really a starts with a C and sounds a little chloriceptic?? chloriciden?? sorry.... I have a butterfly bush I love. The weed patch is really only maybe 5x5 square. This was to be my "wildflower" space but the rose has taken over. So I am limited space wise not to crowd the rose but still look "Wild" but not wild in a weedy way. Love the turtle neck but too dry in the weed patch - have another wet area with lots of lilly & hosta that it would do well in if it needs wet feet

Am thinking of taking everything out this fall but the rose and ivy then replant
with cone flower, sundrops, daisys. And I see this plant that is very wispy with a queen anne's lace look but more spidery - I have no idea what it is but I love this plant.

Am going out of town 2marrow and wont be back till Thursday so dont think I am ignoring you - just out of range LOL

I think with the tick weed, you wanted to say "Coreopsis" - yes, you were close and I knew what you meant. The yellow Blanket flower(in the thumbnail) looks a bit like that, but the flowers themselves are a bit bigger and a different sort of yellow.

Tropical Hibiscus don't last over the winter (you can take them inside), but the Hardy Hibiscus stays planted outside. In fact, it completely dies to the Hibiscus with mulch over the winter at least 6" thick.

The turtleneck likes its feet more on the wet side, so with your lilies and hostas, that would probably be a good spot - needs at least morning sun and best with afternoon shade.

Do you have any of the "white Swan" coneflowers? They are more of a late
season bloomer and don't mind it if they are somewhat on the dry side.
