*~* There's a story attributed to Henry Miller. He is a writer. *~*
Here's the story: A little boy in India walks up to a Guru (an Indian Wise Man) who is sitting and looking at something in his hand. The little boy goes up and looks at it. He doesn't quite understand what it is, so he says to the Guru, "What is it ?" "It's a cocoon", the Guru tells the boy. "Inside the cocoon is a butterfly. Soon the cocoon is going to split and the butterfly will come out". "Could I have it ?", asks the little boy. "Yes", answers the Guru, "but you must PROMISE ME that when the cocoon splits and the butterfly starts to come out and he is beating his wings to get out of the cocoon...you will NOT help him. DO NOT help the butterfly by breaking the cocoon apart. Let him do it by himself". The little boy PROMISED, took the cocoon home with him & then sat down and watched it. Finally he saw it begin to vibrate, move & quiver. Finally the cocoon split. Inside was a beautiful, damp butterfly frantically beating it's wings against the cocoon & trying to get out but, not seeming to be able to do it. The little boy desperately wanted to help ! Finally, he gave in and DISOBEYED the Guru's orders. He pushed the two halves of the cocoon apart and the beautiful butterfly sprang out. But, as soon as it got up in the air....it fell down to the ground and WAS KILLED ! The little boy picked up the dead butterfly and in tears went back to the Guru and showed it to him. "You SEE, little boy", the Guru said to him. "You pushed open the cocoon, didn't you ?" "Yes", said the little boy, "I did". The Guru explained to the little boy, "You DON'T UNDERSTAND. You did not see what you were doing. When the butterfly comes out of the cocoon, the ONLY WAY he can strengthen his wings....is by beating them against the cocoon. It beats against the cocoon, so it's muscles will grow. When you helped it..the way that you did, you PREVENTED it from getting strong. That is why the butterfly fell to the ground and was killed". ************************************************** ************* *~* This is a story that I think every parent should REMEMBER whether we have a CHILD (children) or a PET (pets). Handing a child or pet everything he needs & fulfilling his/her every desire NOT LETTING THEM LEARN ON THEIR OWN...may tend to weaken the muscles he/she should be deleloping on his/her OWN. When the time comes for your child (children) or pet (pets) for him/her to THINK, FEEL, TRY & DO for themselves...they must be ready ! They will...for they MUST in order to be "independant" as an adult. Of course....we help our children or pets when they physically or mentally cannot do it themselves. But, that is NOT what this story talks about. This story is talking about...letting them LIVE & LEARN ! So, let them LIVE & LEARN..the best that they can ! *~* Nikki

That is a lovely illustration, Nikki! So often we ARE tempted to "do too much" for our children (furry or otherwise
)...and the line between help and hinder is a fine one. As a parent, and a dog owner, I guess I just try to do the best I can with what I've got and I always appreciate sincere suggestions and reminders such as this! Thank you for sharing this story! Margo |

Nikki - a very good story and one for Co Corgi members with puppies to take note - don't push too hard and make sure the pups have a good foundation - good food and calcuim for creating strong bones - then when your Corgi gets out of the 'cocoon' (post-puppy stage), he/she will be able to jump, run and dance like they are meant to.
