Mrs. Murphy Mysteries/Rita Mae Brown - 09-01-2006, 09:14 AM

OK, I love the Mrs. Murphy Mysteries written by Rita Mae Brown and her cat Sneaky Pie Brown. My Tucker was named for Mrs. Murphy's sidekick, Tee Tucker the Corgi. They are light and always good for a laugh.

Does anyone here read them?.... I have some catching up to do!

I have been out of touch w/her books, I think I have missed the last few. I had a long car drive yesterday so I stopped by the library to pick up a book on tape. They had one of her books I hadn't read - "Sour Puss" so I picked it up.

I'm being overwhelmed w/ the bioterrorism theme. Very timely but hey! I'd rather hear about the usual cast of characters in Crozet, VA!!!!

Is this unique for this book or have Ms. Brown and Ms. Pie taken to the soap box?

I have only read one of their books that a co-worked let me borrow and it just wasn't much up to my speed. Too many older women just sitting around gossiping all the time. *shrug* I know they are really popular though, and I may have just grabbed one of the less interesting ones. Chances are I won't get around to trying another to find out if that is the case though.

Well, a lot of the books are these small town women gossiping. While they are gossiping, the cat, dog, and animal pals run around solving murders. It is pure fluff but I get a real kick out of the interactions of the dog and cat. If you read more than one, the small town folksy-ness gets to you. And you get to know the characters.

Again, not great liturature, not deep, but good for a chuckle and great as book on tape if you are doing long highway driving.

This book seemed to focus less on the smalltown cast of characters, and I miss those gossipy folks!

Susan,

It does sound like a turn or change for the series (and I am a fan - didn't like what Disney did with Murder, She Meowed aka Murder, She Purred - book was much better). I'm behind in the series, haven't read maybe the last couple including the one you are talking about. I'm sure Rita Mae probably is no stranger to soap boxes, they usually aren't a part of the mystery series though. I also like her Sister Jane Arnold series featuring Foxhounds and a hunt club. IF I were only going to recommend one out of the Mrs. Murphy series, it'd have to be Muder At Monticello. The books really capture Virginia culture/nuances - natives at least.

In the dog related mystery series around, I also really enjoy Susan Conant's Holly Winters series (Alaskan Malamutes) and Melissa Berenson's Melody Travis (Standard Poodles) series. Both have corgi mentions in at least one of the books. Carole Lea Benjamin's mystery series is a lot of fun too and I've read several of those, just a little harder to come across in my area.
