Thought you guys would be interested in such brave and strong dogs out there. Around 1 mile away, there is a center for the blind not far from where I work. I always see the people with their seeing eye dogs. I admire the intelligence, courage, and smarts of these dogs. Milo will never be a drug sniffing dog but I'm proud and happy to read great feats by other dogs. Milo is just a civilian puppy.

The Police in New Zealand celebrated their 50th year last weekend of having dogs for police work. The national police dog training facilties are a walking distance away from where I live.
I will never do a story about police dogs who are used for attacking people because I consider that the wrong use of a dog. A German Shepherd named Edge was entered in this year's NZ Canine Heroes awards but I placed that dog last among the entries for the category he was entered into. Edge was told to attack a man who was trying to kill himself and in the process, Edge got very seriously stabbed. I say if any one want to kill themselves, let them do it and not risk a dog from getting painfully injured and killed. Last year another German Shepherd won the service category of the canine awards for attacking a suspected crim or two.Dogs used for tracking is excellent but not sent in to tear a suspected crim to shreds and be in the firing line themselves.

Oh wow, Michael, I didn't know that happened to poor Edge. I concur that dogs trained for that is absolutely wrong. If they are trained for sniffing and tracking, I have no problem with. They are very smart. I have read numerous stories of dogs saving people's lives so I just wanted to bring to people's attention how smart and wonderful they are as friends and companions to us.

Sadly, on 9/11 here in NY 5 years ago, there were dogs who lost their lives saving people also. Heroes come in many shapes, sizes, and breeds!

Well the two stories that Michael told are sadd, but the fact of the matter is Dogs save a lot of human lives by attacking people.

I think you may be right Adkmehrman, and I bet police officers could tell some stories on that. If I were in my home and some maniac broke in and threatened my life/kids, a German Shepherd may come in quite handy at that moment and I would be all for the dog taking care of him.

Some dogs are trained for a specific purpose. Bloodhounds and beagles are the best tracking dogs and sniffers. German shepherds have a great presence and work so well with cops that many cops get sad once their canine partner gets injured. I have seen a special on PBS before where officers talked about their love, admiration, and trust in their canine partners. Some dogs when they retire get a badge of honor too! I thought that was so sweet.

There have been cases - far too many - when either the police dog handler or the dog has mucked things up and the dog has attacked and mauled the wrong person such as an innocent bystander or a person not guilty of any criminal action.

Here is a story that appeared in our paper tonight; but it took place in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin. It didn't involve a police dog, but it was a Golden Retriever/German Shepherd mix who was 13 years old and was her specially trained dog.

A disabled woman(who had lost her leg three years ago) was watching TV while sitting on her sofa, when her cat walked across the sofa , jumped on a table and knocked over a lit candle which started the artificial plants on fire.

Her dog, named Jesse, came to her aid. He brought her the phone to call 911 and also brought her artificial leg. The dog helped to get her outside. However, once outside, the dog heard the cat meowing upstairs and went back in to rescue the cat; despite her calling the dog back. Neither the dog or cat made it out

When rescuers arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.
The woman received third degree burns to an arm, but will be fine.

Talk about a story of heroism.

Her dog Jesse is a true hero. He even rescued the darn cat that caused the fire. Sometimes I wonder why the good have to leave us. I really do. A very poignant story. Gosh, making me teary eyed. Thanks for sharing, Linda.

It is a sad story, and "he tried" to rescue the cat - neither of them survived.

I never have burning candles in my home(though I love candles) because this is what can happen when one has cats.(which I do love cats also)

I dont do candles unless they are the yankee candles in the glass jars and then they are put on surfaces that i am positive the cats cant get to...mine are not super jumpers. The candles that are the elegant tall candles that you put in candle holders on a dining room table for example will never find their way into my house.. they are way too big a risk.
IF you love candles and the lovely smells, brookstones and sharper image both have scented candles that are flameless- they look so real but they do not have fire - just something to think about or check out...

I do those Melted tarts in the plug in burners. I have one cat who will come running and dive onto the counter or coffee tables - one time knocking over a heavy ceramic mug filled with cappuccino all over the carpet
