Yikes!

I use Peter Pan for the dogs, although dogs are supposedly better able to deal with salmonella because of having shorter digestive tracts... *goes to check the jars anyway...*

I never knew that peanut butter can also be contaminated with samonella (thought it can be found on seafood only...) I was sick with samonella last year & was hospitalised for 1 week Ate some oyster & was sick for 3 days before my boyfriend sent me to the hospital. I dun eat Oyster anymore....the ordeal was really terrible, I can't imagine how bad it would be for our Corgis too

I love love love love loooovvvvveeeee Corgis!!!

Apparently they have never had to recall peanut butter for salmonella before...the peanuts are heated to such a high temp that the germs are killed. The story I read said the jars or equipment may have been the source of contamination.

I am a choosy Dog Mom and I choose Jif - so no pb shortage in this house.

Cripes, you Americans must be shaking in your boots - peanut butter must be the most favourite food item you can buy. It is very popular here in NZ as well but not quite to the extent as in the USA. One school in NZ has banned peanut butter sandwiches because a couple of the pupils are very allergic to peanuts and so the school thought it best to keep all forms of nuts away from the school. My kids favour a peanut butter brand made in China - Delish - over about four others that are prevalent at food chain stores. Poisoning substances in a lot of food items can crop up at anytime it seems.

About 2 years ago, Dylan had a very bad case of Salmonella.......for an entire year! I can't tell you the fear of watching your wee corgi stand there and have pure blood pouring from his bottom. We thought we would lose him.

A year of meds, that happening, vomiting, the poor pupper, he had a time of it. Stangely enough, it all seemed to strengthen his system, never even a tummy upset now.

Until then I had no idea that dogs could get it. Or that we could get it from them. Or that he could have given it to Monty or another dog. Good thing that mine are trained to go in their own potty area, I had to bleach it evey time he went....for the entire year. Also good that Monty is a girl, she always goes first, as he like to go on top of hers.

And Cindy, I did hear about this on the news this morning, but I confess, when I read your topic title: Peanut Butter Recall, I thought it was going to be about training Recall.

Somehow, I'm managing to contain my shaking boots... >O.o<

Peanut butter is not one of my favorite food items (although it is a huge hit with both of my dogs). It's more like something extra to have around the house in case we are due for grocery shopping or I don't have time to cook myself a decent meal (peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will do for a meal or two lol). I prefer my tofu stir fry dish or a slice of pecan or pumpkin pie over something containing peanut butter any day. >^^;<

I did have to throw out one jar I had for the dogs...

I swear, first it's spinach, now it's peanut butter... those germs sure are popping up in strange places lately lol...

I had a jar of the peanut butter with an expiration date of 2/07 but same lot number. It was half gone. I used it for Digger's meds and also for Chip's. I threw it away. Normally I buy Jif - it is getting so you can't eat anything any more.

Thankfully no one here is a big peanut butter fan, so i have the same jar from a year ago- a low carb , low sugar smart options or something like that- tastes GOD awful so that is why it was still sittting in the cabinet- finally it made its way where it truely belongs, the garbage can....

Barbara, I am glad you posted that horrible experience that Dylan had because i think it is a widly misconceived notion that dogs can't get salmonella...this is one of the reasons I dont feed raw ( that and ewwww I am squeamish)..

Nothing to do with peanut butter but last night we went out to eat in celebration to a nice steakhouse. I ordered a salad with my steak and found a 1 inch section of ink pen in my salad. You never know what you may be eating.

We like peanutbutter.... but I don't quake easily. Both my jars have the recall number (not quaking...) one jar is 1/2 empty (still no quakes yet...) if we haven't got sick from that one yet figure it's not contaminated. The 2nd jar I'll write to Peter Pan and get my money back - I am Retired you know... oh NO I said that out loud... what was that....aaaaahhhh just the mention of the R word and Hubby's eyebrows shot up... now he's looking worried and checking his wallet..... and starting to QUAKE

Bonnie,

One time when The Boys were around 8 & 9 we stopped at a Fast Food place on way to Zoo... I ordered a salad, ate 1/4 of it and found a little green worm crawling around!!!!! Took it back to the Manager and he ask if I wanted another salad??? Leah's Dad laughed
