It is probably still going on, but a few years ago some crafty NZ guys were getting large donations off Asian (mainly Japanese) visitors (tourists) towards a save a lamb/sheep fund. The tourists would visit sheep farms and told that they could save a certain lamb from slaughter to leading The Good Life if they made a donation. They would choose a lamb or sheep and would be sent regular reports and latest photos of their chosen woolly animal. I always thought it was a cruel joke. NZ has 4 million people and at one time had 3 million people and 40 million sheep.

Which, I guess, just proves the point that where there is a fool there is also a crafty man.
