Red face Corgis watching TV - 03-03-2008, 12:13 AM

Hi,

Its been awhile since I post. In the last few weeks, my pem, Milo has trained me to change the channel whenever there is a dog on TV. He gets overly excited, jumps at the TV stand and started barking at the TV dog. Then proceed to cry either because he couldn't play with the TV dog, or because he thought there is an intruder dog inside the house. So, any suggestions on how to correct this behavior? I kinda missed watching TV shows with dogs...

Oh, and he loves watching sports channel.

Chloe, my corgi/chow mix LOVES watching TV. Her favorite is basketball and Star War movies, the little robot R2D2 attracts her as soon as she hears the first whistle or beep out of him. In fact, on her dogster page is a picture of her watching Star Wars. Luckily, she doesn't carry on when any dogs or such come on TV. She just runs over and sits down to watch.

Wow, That is pretty interesting. I have a similar problem that involves the TV. When ever I turn it on Nick gets jealous that I am not playing with him. He starts making corgi noises and kicking his tennis balls around. THis usually ends up with me turning off the TV, flipping on the radio and playing with him. I kind of like not watching TV but at the same time it is getting ridiculous.

One thing I can offer you which I don't know will work in your case but if you can tire the puppy out before you watch you shows he just might be too tired to give a damn about what is on TV. I have found a good 1/2 hour to and hour at the dog park usually does the trick.

My last dog lunged at the TV if any animal came on, but dogs or horses in particular. He also didn't like people raising their voices or yelling at each other, so any drama scene with a fight upset him. He never outgrew it, but if I wanted to watch TV, I'd attach him to me with a leash. Then he couldn't get to the TV, I could usually get him to lie down. If not, he went in his kennel in the bedroom until my show was over.

I'm very happy that Charlie hasn't shown more than a mild curiousity to anything on TV. One of my cats loves a lot of Animal Planet programming. Charlie pretty much doesn't care.

Ahh.. to sit and unwind with your dog on the couch without the anticipation of the commotion that comes with door-bell sounds and TV dogs.

Thanks for the suggestion Matt... unfortunately, thats when I turn on the TV, in the evening after taking Milo back from the dog park. Milo can still muster quite a bit of energy to dance on his hind legs and barks. I tried watching "Eight Below" the other day and never got past 15 mins. Sigh...

Well, maybe have a spray bottle nearby and when he starts his carrying on, spritz him and tell him no or quiet. He'll get the idea that making noise while the TV is on is a bad idea. Whenever Duncan gets his whining going for no reason, all I have to do is touch or point at the spray bottle and he quiets down.
