After Hurricane Katrina where 250,000 household pets - dogs and cats - were left stranded and many people perished because they stayed at home in refusing to leave their pets behind, there are two things in the USA to counter this.

1. The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Evacuation Standards Act. This ensures that Americans are not forced to leave their pets behind during a disaster and that state and local govt must have plans for the evacuation of pets and service animals.

2. The formation of SART - State Animal response Team - which gives victims of a disaster a safe place to drop off their pets and a reunited after the disaster service.

I have often though what would happen if a disaster struck and I couldn't get to Nick. I think a part of me would die.

I actually remember during the early days of the Katrina evacuation seeing a purebred Sable and White PWC getting on one of the rescue boats
