Nutro food - 04-19-2008, 08:48 AM

There "may" (or may not) be some problems with Nutro foods. If there are any Nutro feeders on the forum, might be a good idea to keep an eye on your dogs.

Thanks for the heads up!. I don't give Duncan that kind of food, but I have bought their biscuits in the past I think, or got them as a birthday present from Complete Pets Mart.

I wonder if this is somehow related to the Nutro shortage/supply difficulty that I've been seeing signs in pet stores and reading about in a couple of other forums? Some of the dogsters were convinced it was a "cover up." Guess we'll have to wait and see...

Nutro says that they recalled mainly cat food products but some dog food products in March,2007 because of melamine-tainted contamination.
They say that this is in no way cause for concern of their current products on store shelves.

Michael, do you honestly believe, even after what everyone experienced during last year's dog food recalls, that most dog food manufacturers are going admit to problems with their foods if their not being forced (IE being investigated)? I believe very few will do that, and if I'm not mistaken, I believe Nutro has had several problems in the past. I think this is one that bears watching.

One issue is they were bought by Pedigree. Formulas and ingredients have been changed. Whether that is a part of the problem or not, I'm not in a position to know or say.

It appears that the Nutro problems are more widespread and separate from the melamine scare of last year. In addition to Debbie's link, here's another link to more recent problems with Nutro's foods:

VoyForums: Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food Recall Message Board

I had my rottweiler on Nutro Natural his whole life, as it was one of the only foods without any ingredients he tested positive for allergies. He died last summer with torsion/bloat. I hope the Nutro didn't kill him.

This twisting and important subject has overtones. Many of the dog food manufacturers have been forced into producing so called 'natural' diets to keep up with the market and the perceptions of some of the buying public. Is it not ironic then when natural formula diets are suspect or indeed recalled because of contamination or whatever.
As the good doctor said, one of the two most important aspects of dog food is to have informed trust of the producer. A good producer wll recall its products by its own volition if they themselves discover an anomaly before any food agency does or doesn't.

The parent company of Pedigree is Mars, isn't it?

It would be nice if producers would honestly police themselves, but sadly here in the U.S., honesty (which in my opinion begets loyalty to a brand) and profit don't seem to go together any more. I feel the dog food companies who produce their own dog food and ONLY produce pet food are the most likely to have the best interests of pets at heart.

Yes Mars owns Pedigree. They bought Nutro a year (perhaps two) ago.

Diamond <IMO> is one pet food company that really stepped up to the plate when they had the afloxin contamination in one of their plants a few years back.

Do you feel they've lost sales/customers because of their honesty? I know many who won't consider anything made by Diamond, because of their recalls. Bringing me back to the point I was trying to make to Michael, that most of these companies (IMO) will try to cover up their problems, because honesty cuts into their profits.

I know there are a lot of people who say they aren't going to go near any brand that was involved in any kind of recall, which after the Menu situation limits choices a lot.

Diamond has developed several new lines and has others coming out that, at least in the dog fancy, are being welcomed and being fed. Some of these are giving them a new customer base.

What I find more frightening is brands where a recall has been done without any public knowledge of it and then to have that brand being touted as one of the best by some people.

And in the big picture it is vital to weed out the honest from the dishonest. But what makes this difficult is that some dog food companies can make an honest mistake despite scutiny of the ingredients they bring in and the companies that they themselves deal with; whilst dog owners think that the dog food companies are being exposed when the fat hits the frypan.
