Cardis out in the UK

There were 7.3 million dogs in the UK in 2007 making dogs the number one pet in the UK.
Puppy registrations for Cardigan Corgis in 2007 with the Kennel Club based in England numbered a paltry and worrisome 68. I think that covers the entire UK with the Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish not having separate kennel clubs for dog registrations. With 209 breeds contributing regstered puppies in the UK, Cardis are very near the rear of the 2007 registration list. Very relieved that Cardis are thriving in the USA.
A leading British newspaper, The Independent stated back in January that the Queen must be upset with the demise of the Cardi because that is the breed she loves and owns. Well even a British newspaper can't get it right. Of course the Queen has had the far more popular Pembroke Corgis for over 50 years.

Isis counts as one of the 68 :P

I wouldn't be too bothered about it though, there are some very dedicated breeders over here who will not let this breed become endangered. However we also have some stupid breeders who think in order to solve this we need to breed more cardis' continually.

I'm just sorry that Cardis are so out of fashion. But they are not the only dog breed to fall into this category.

Of course some Corgi owners will tell you that Corgis (both Pems and Cardis) are such a special breed that they require special attention and care. Perhaps this is working against the Cardi in particular.

Last night I got a phone call from a woman with a 4 year old Pem, Sophie, who wants me to look after Sophie for five -six weeks while she and her hubbie are on holiday later this year. Her remarks were: Corgis are different to other dogs and so need someone who understands them. I don't quite agree, but I'd try the same for Taylor when the occasion arises. By the way, I told Sophie's owner that she would have to join the Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Club first - and she is going to.

Its strange that there are more dogs in the UK ( human population around 70 million) than there are domestic cats. In New Zealand, Australia and USA there are many more cats than dogs.
