The very large grey area is that both Animal Rights and Animal Welfare people are opposed to unnecessary cruel and inhumane treatment of animals. Beyond that very large grey overlap, we Animal Welfare people believe that people still have rights too. Like the right to own a pet, the right to eat a steak for dinner, and the right to expend the life of a lab rat (or hundreds) in hopes of curing cancer. The Animal Rights people believe that any human interference or direct interaction with animals by humans is cruel. Period. We don't have the right to own a pet, the cow's life and well-being is more important than our choosing a steak for protein and nutrition, and if the population is wiped out by a virus then so be it...at least we saved the rats. The split between the two groups seems fairly black and white.
Animal Rights people are counting on human nature. Most people take broad ideas at surface or face value and form an quick opinion. Most are too bothered, or don't have time, to dig a little deeper to see if there is a hidden agenda. It's too much trouble. It's like going to a hotel and because the bed is draped in a beautiful comforter, you think the room is clean and don't look at the mattress for bedbugs. When the Animal Rights folks say, "We're for shutting down puppy mills due to the cruelty and inhumane treatment found there", most of us would say "Me too!" We have just played into their hands by supporting one of their causes without knowing the group's end goal of completely wiping out the use of dogs as pets. I am for shutting down the cruelty and abuse of puppy mills from an Animal Welfare standpoint. I will never support the Animal Rights agnda. There is a very clear distinction for the few people who have looked under the lovely covers and found the bedbugs. For Michael and the majority of people who fail to dig any deeper than the apparently noble first impression of the Animal Rights groups, I hope you've got some good bug spray.

Wonderfully said Chris and I will add that anyone that tells me that I can't put out rat poison to elliminate rats is crazy. Have I said that I hate rats. Well I hate rats. Good example.
