Better prepared
A severe hurricane is heading for New Orleans and places close by and i have caught a glimpse of the preparedness of the authorities and the people.
Noticed a sign concerning pets (mainly dogs and cats of course) that said to have them ready for evacuation. Now that is a lot different to the last time when people were told to leave their pets at home and this created all kinds of problems and emotions and no doubt contributed to the human and certainly pet animal death toll. Very pleased to see the new regulations in working order - that taking care of, and the safe haven for pets such as dogs at the same time as people is now encouraged. Barack Obama mentioned Hurricane Katrina in his magnificent speech as Democrats Pres nominee. The way people and pets were treated (or rather, not treated) by Govt was an absolute scandel. |

Yes the state of Louisiana is in better hands than it was when Katrina hit. There were many lessons learned and programs implemented, such as AKC's No Pet Left Behind. McCain has said he may have the Republican National Convention "suspended" depending upon what Gustav brings. They are watching things closely.
This is looking to be a really nasty hurricane. Hopes and prayers that maybe it will turn and go back out into the Gulf; but most importantly that damage will be minimal and no more lives will be lost. Debbie Last edited by glencorgi; 08-30-2008 at 10:13 PM. |

After the flooding in Iowa this year and the way that Cindy talked about the AKC helping with displaced animals I think that giving to the AKC is very beneficial at times like these : http://www.akc.org/donations
Maybe we can get Cindy to describe how the AKC helped in Cedar Rapids.
