Agility easier for Corgis - 02-11-2008, 12:53 AM

Thrilled to say that huge changes to agility in New Zealand from January,2009 will make it much much easier for Corgis - and I am thrilled to say that I have had some significant imput into the turnaround.

It is expected that in NZ, the four standard dog competition sizes (Maxi, midi, mini and micro) will have separate competitions at meetings as they do almost everywhere in the world. The jump heights for minis ( where Corgis are ranked) will be greatly reduced - hurdles from 380mm (15inches) to 300mm (11.8inches); hoops from 300mm at the base to 200mm and long jump from 900mm (35.4inches) to 600mm (23.6in).

Taylor will fly.

As well the A-frame will be reduced in height and I am hoping that they will include the seesaw in reducing the height for the smaller dogs.

Congradulations on your success at having some sense put into the agility standards for smaller animals. Taylor should do well in trials now, so we are looking for you to lead the pack/crew.
I wish I could see Taylor taking to the course. Can someone take videos and make copies? Jane

Good work on your part Michael for your influence in the changes!

Your note that Corgis compete in minis compelled me to recheck our US height divisions. I had read on an agility Corgi owner's website that Corgis under 10" competed in the 8" class, and over 10" went in the 12" class. That info was not correct. From the AKC website, 11" is the cutoff to compete in the 8" class here in the US. (I'm quite interested because Charlie is 10.25" right now. I'm hoping he'll stay under 11" to have an easier time competing.)

US Height Divisions:
Measuring Devices. Dogs may only be entered in one
jump height division per day for all classes. The following
jump height divisions shall be used in all trial classes:
8 Inches: For dogs 11 inches and under at the withers.
12 Inches: For dogs 14 inches and under at the withers.
16 Inches: For dogs 18 inches and under at the withers.
20 Inches: For dogs 22 inches and under at the withers.
24 Inches: For dogs over 22 inches at the withers.
26 Inches: Dogs may be entered at this height at
their owner’s discretion.

In New Zealand and in many other countries and at the world champs (of which the USA is party to) pure bred Corgis are classified as "mini" unless there happens to be a pure bred Corgi that is exceptionally leggy and tall then it would appear in the 'midi' competition.
I used one of the major USA agility organisations in submissions on changes to the NZ competition. That organisation had similar classifications to that of NZ.
