Sheep Herding with Conan

Here is a video the two of us herding this morning. We have been off for a few months now due to some health problems with Conan, and we only had four lessons during that time. So we've pretty much started over, and this would be our second time around.

Please ignore my lack of handling skills. I'm especially reassessing my marker training after he blows off my sit, too. Oh, and be prepared to get a little dizzy, as I'm not very good at changing directions.

Anyway, enjoy! Input and advice is always, always, always welcome!!

I don't know anything about herding but Conan looked like he was having a great time! He had a big grin on his face!=)

Oh great video! Conan is adorable and looks like he is having such a good time. Dillon did his herd instinct test october of 08... he had such a blast and did so well. I would love to live close to a facility to work with him for herding but most of the really local places here only want to work with border collies... are they ever underestimating the power of the corgi!!!

Great video

Wonderful video! Conan looks VERY attentive and looks like he is really enjoying himself! Can't wait to get Bella started in some agility and obedience! I've started a little at home, but at 8 weeks old, I only do about 2 minute sessions right now

Thanks everyone! It's been hard to find trainers who work with all breeds (ie not just BCs) here too. But it's so worth it! I highly recommend it if you guys get the chance It's so fun!!

You and Conan have definitely inspired us to investigate the herding dog club in our area, to evaluate whether we are ready to begin some training for Panda and me with an instructor, or whether we need to complete more obedience classes together first.

We have sheep on our ranch and Panda would be a great addition to the current herding crew, but without proper training, she would be over-hyped with excitement and be a complete danger and annoyance.

My sister-in-law uses her Aussie (Arrow), and her Yorkie (Owen) ... I swear it is true ... honest! ... to move the sheep home to the corrals at night from the pasture. Both dogs have never been trained and are working on pure undirected instinct alone ... which is often just short of disastrous ... but ya gotta bring the sheep in and keep them from becoming a coyote dinner! I should say that Arrow, the Aussie, is working by instinct ... but Owen, the Yorkie, is just downright bossy and is afraid of absolutely nothing.

There are lots of competitions and fun dog events scheduled for our Winter Fair being held this weekend at our local fairgrounds, so I will make some contacts for classes then.

We hope that herding, agility, and flyball can be in our near future.

Keep up the terrific work, U2! You are an inspiration!

You're so lucky to have sheep!! I am really considering owning my own stock someday. I eventually want to work Conan on cattle too. How exciting!! It's really amazing how much they can do with just instinct alone. I bet it was a blast watching Arrow and Owen (especially Owen, lol!) herd the sheep! Shoulda got some video of that

You should definitely get Panda out there. I think you'd both have a blast! It's like their long lost true Corgi love. Though Conan gave one a good shoulder bite last Sunday. But it was a pretty lively bunch of sheep haha.

I love flyball! Agility sounds so fun too. Ah, so many sports and so little time!!
