Question corgi fairs

Hi Debbie Glencorgi,

I was reading a thread where you talked about corgi fairs and information booths. I see you are in NC - I live in WV with family in Charlotte. I will be retiring in two weeks and will have a lot more time to check out things that interest me like your fair.

Could you tell us more about the NC corgi fairs, the dates and locations or a web site to check out. I would love to come to one this spring or summer. It sounds like a great outing. Are well behaved corgis welcome or would it be better to leave them at home? I have two - Emma is very easy going and socialized and Chloe is 11 weeks now. She seems very smart is already getting the hang of potty training, comming when called, and is learning to sit on command (with treat in hand .

I agree that not everyone who wants a corgi or lab or beagle for that matter really needs to have that pet. Some people and pet are not suited to one another - that doesn't mean they shouldn't have a pet just maybe not the first breed they think about. We had a Golden Retriever while my sons were growing up - she was perfect for active boys and I am so glad we had her. Their Grandmother had an Italian Greyhound - also a perfect match for her BUT not my boys. Nothing wrong with either breed as long as they match the lifestyle of the owner.

The North Carolina Corgi Picnic is usually held in September, this year probably in the Greensboro area. As details firm up about it, I will be glad to pass them along.

Now another one that is coming up in May is the TN Corgi Picnic held in Kingsport, TN. <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tncorgipicnic/?yguid=148757176> <http://webpages.charter.net/noelcorgi/picnic06> will take you to more information about it. I'll be there and it is a great corgi time. Well behaved corgis are welcomed and you can go back through last year's photos and get an idea of what the picnic is like. We do have a great silent auction with all kinds of goodies to tempt corgi owners with the proceeds going to CorgiAid <http://www.corgiaid.org>.

You might want to check the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac's website for upcoming activities they have planned too. <http://www.pwccp.org> Some of them may be doable for you also.

Debbie

I've organised another Corgi bush walk (about 45 minutes) and picnic for the region I live in for Sunday, March 26 Our current membership is 16 Corgis and 12 families. Interestingly, Debbie says "her" picnic is for well behaved Corgis (only) because the only misbehaving Corgis in my walking group are two Cardis. They are most un-Cardi-like but we are so small in numbers at present (but growing) and the owner of the two Cardis is such a nice person, that I can't bring myself to shoo her away. But I did entice her to ask how she can get her dogs to improve their behaviour and I offered some advice .at our last walk event.

Just as a clarification, neither of these are "my" picnics. T-gal asked if well-behaved corgis are welcome, and I answered her as, yes well-behaved corgis are welcome. That does not mean that there aren't several in attendance at any of the events with behavior less than angelic. Owners are expected to manage and control their dogs according to the needs of the dogs. Crates and exercise pens are very helpful if one gets too stressed or needs a timeout. One year in TN there was a corgi girl who decided she would resource guard the hamburger and hotdog trimmings at the Saturday evening cookout. Year before last in NC, there was someone in attendance with a fear biting, dog aggressive corgi. This owner had her girl muzzled, enjoyed activities which didn't involve close interactions with other dogs and the two of them got to enjoy a day together in the company of other corgi owners. One of the organzers was a bit disturbed, but personally I saw no problem and applauded the manner in which she related to and managed her dog. There have been a couple of other incidents caused by irresponsible human actions. But overall given the number of people and corgis in attendance (last year's count in NC was close to 100 people and perhaps half that number of corgis); things run amazingly smooth.

So T-gal, come on, bring your corgis and enjoy yourself.

Debbie

Debbie,

Thanks for the info - I am going to check Hubby's calender for the Tenn. picnic (he's a shift worker) to see if he's home that weekend. When we go somewhere new I'd rather be the navagator than the driver the first time out.
I love to look at the new and let him worry about the details

I checked all the web sites you gave and have put them in my favorites for future references. The pictures for Tenn. were very fun - everyone including the furry ones seem to be enjoying themselves. The black one featured on the homepage was very cute and what I envision Chloe to sort of look like when she is full grown.

Michael, I ask about well-behaved mainly because when Em was a year old a friend invited us over to visit her and her lab. The lab wasn't on a lead when we stepped into the driveway she broke away from my friend and almost had Emma for lunch b4 Hubby rescued her! It was upsetting for me and my friend and Em. The lab was put up - her other dog were fine with Emma around. My friend apologized for months.

I don't think any of us are upset with dogs who are barky or shy or overly playful or even guarding the mustard. We are all dog people - but no one wants to put their corgi in harms way. Of course the only way to socialize our corgis are to be in social setting. I would hope owners wouldn't bring their dog to an outing knowing their pet couldn't handle the pressure without taking precautions. Like the case of the one lady who had her corgi muzzled and sitting a little away from everyone - she was taking baby steps to bring her pet around others without undue stress to her corgi or danger to others.
Maybe this year her corgi will be able to socialize more.

I am looking forward to hearing more about the NC meeting too.

thanks!

PS Michael - I would love to be able to come to NZ for your picnic too! After watching all of the Lord of the Ring movies and seeing your beautiful country used as the setting we have New Zealand down as our first vacation choice soon as we win the lottery! So if we win Saturday we will see you on the
26th LOL

Hi T-Gal
The truth is that I can take Corgis on walks that are right out of the best scenery from the Lord Of The Rings triology. By all means come to NZ - with your Corgis - and you're welcome to stay at my place. I am a stone throw away from a walk in the beautiful bush/ woods. If I won a lottery, I'd take Taylor to the USA and we would compete in agility against other Corgis.
