Smile *~* I want a, "Puppy/Dog Play Day" !

*~* Some of you know that I live in Nixa, Missouri....but, most of you MAY NOT KNOW...that I have not met one single person who has a Corgi !!

Midnight & Sunshine LOVE people and also other dogs.
They are extremely friendly.

I walk them twice/a/day...and they do get to see a few dogs during their walk
but, I would LOVE to join a Corgi Play Group !!

HOW DO I FIND A..Corgi Play Group near my city (Nixa, Missouri)
* Nearby areas are: Springfield & Ozark *
** I...DO NOT want to drive very far. **

Thanks in advance..for any advice !

*~* Nikki

Nikkii - your quest to locate other Corgis in your area/region is easy.

Ring the local radio stations and kindly ask them to put over a community ad asking for people with Welsh Corgi dogs to contact you for possible social outings.

Contact the nearest Corgi clubs - no matter how far away they are - and ask them for address details etc of anyone with a Corgi who is a member of the club and lives in your area/region.

Once you gather in a few people those people may know of others with Corgis close by, and so it goes on.

Ask the pet shop staff/managers fi they know the details of anyone owning pedigree Corgis.

Once you have reached this point, contact me for further ideas.

Nikki,

Do you have a "local" county kennel club? If so, I would start there by letting them know you are interested in getting in contact with other Corgi Owners - also, you may want to leave your name with trainers in your area in case they know of any Corgi owners so they could contact you.

When I go to the dog park with Duchess she doesn't care if the dogs are large or small. Corgis do not get any more attention from her than the other dogs. I prefer to have at least a few dogs her size to walk with. Two Bassett Hounds and a few Corgis are in the group we go with. If they are not there she walks with any other dogs. But that is all she does is walk, there is no play with her. She referees other dogs play and barks at them when they try to start something with her.

A neighbor came over yesterday with her 40 pound mixed rescue dog. Very nice girl and her and Cody seems to get along; however, this female dog seems a bit dominant over him.

Do I need to worry about any dog injurying his back with play - I guess what I am asking is...should he play with dogs more his own size or does the size not matter, but I should look more for how rough the other dog plays?

I noticed that when they were playing in the back yard, that Cody sort of just
"gums her" while the other dog grabs down with her teeth on his neck and other body parts, but he did not yelp, so I am assuming this was just typical dog play?

*~* Linda,
I went on yahoo & used the search engine and typed in many different things.

I typed: Pembroke Corgi meeting groups (no luck)
I typed: Corgi meeting group near Nixa, Missouri (no luck)

The Pembroke Corgi Club (PWCC) DOES NOT have a kennel in Missouri.
{ I did not see one mentioned on the website}

* We DO NOT have a, "Dog Park" here in Nixa. There will soon be a Springfield Dog Park. It is in process of being completed...soon..I think. *

HELP...any other opinions or suggestions ?

** Petsmart would NOT let me advertise to start a Corgi Meeting group. **

I thought of maybe going to the Library. I think there is a bulletin board there where people can advertise things.

Jane - a lot of Corgis are not naturally attuned to playing with other dogs. They might just want to meet socially - circling and smelling but not physically playing. But I would say that at any given occasion, a Corgi not bent on playing rough and tumble, will find a soulmate. So Duchess may yet 'perform.'

With Kennel club, I meant local "county" Kennel Club - not for a particular breed. For example - lets say you lived in "Florence county", then you could see if there is the "Florence County Kennel Club" - some counties have these, I know there are a few in Wisconsin. They cater to all breeds, offer
classes, etc and training. I don't know how large the area is where you live, but check out adjoining counties for clubs.

I don't know why PetsMart would not allow you to do this. You could put an
ad in the paper regarding wanting to get a Corgi play/walking group organized,
but you may want to open up a temporary P.O. Box and then interested people could send their info to you at that address.

Also,

are there Corgi breeders in your area? Look on the PWCC website for breeders in your area/State - then contact the breeders personally and see if they would tell you if they sold any of their corgis to people in your area and if she would be willing to contact them for you in regards to your wanting to start this group. Maybe the people who bought dogs from the breeders would be willing to have her give out their names to you for you to call them.

These are my suggestions, I think that is all I can think of

Nikki,

How far are you from St. Louis? There are a number of corgi events in that area. The Gaitway PWC Club is based there and it is a PWCCA affiliate club. Faery Tails Corgi Rescue holds an annual picnic and has meet ups. There's also something like "meetup.com" where you can put in your interest and connect w/people with like interests that way. A local kennel club could be county or city and I do know there is one in Springfield. Breeders are not likely to give out names of their puppy buyers, so that isn't a route I would suggest.

I'll try to think of some more suggestions tomorrow.

Nikki - if there is no Corgi club in your vicinity eg city or state try the closest Corgi clubs to where you are because they would likely have members who live in your locality. For example, I am a member of the Auckland-based Corgi club yet I live 450 miles away from Auckland. In my case it is not the nearest Corgi club to where I live, but that's another story.
The closer club to where I live called the Central Welsh Corgi League, gave me the names and addresses of all their members who live in my region which is the Wellington region. That was helpful in my forming the Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Group.
I'm planning another walk and picnic either this Sunday or the following for the WWCW.

Deb,

Yes, I know that breeders would not likely give out the names of their puppy buyers, but in my post, I meant that maybe the breeder would be willing to contact a couple of her puppy buyers HERSELF for Nikki, to see if that person would be interested in Nikkis' idea... Then, SHE,(The Breeder), could pass on Nikki's name and phone number and the buyer could contact Nikki themselves if they were interested in her play/walking group she wants to form.

Maybe most breeders are too busy to want to make a call for Nikki, but then again, she may luck out and get a breeder that is willing to do this for her; she won't know for sure, unless she tries.

Also, try the meetup.com like Deb suggested, I have seen that site, but had forgot the name of it.

*~* YES....I did find www.meetup.com and I posted a topic there. I also posted in craigslist: www.craigslist.com.

St. Louis... is about 3 1/2 hours away from me.

Springfield....is only about 30-40 minutes away from me.

** I...did...call 3 breeders that I found on the internet. ONE said that they will give out my info to people so that I might meet other Corgi owners.
We shall see...we shall see. **

Debbie, WHERE do I look to find the Corgi events in St.Louis ??
( I am ignorant... )

Thank you...for helping me find the way !

I'm not sure if Gaitway has a website yet or not. <http://www.corgirescuestlouis.org/> is the Faery Tails Corgi Rescue website and they post upcoming events there. I know Gaitway holds some events at Purina Farms, but outside of their specialty which appears on the PWCCA website, I'm not sure how to get on their mailing list. There are a TON of corgis in MO. Some of the creme de la creme of Breeders live there, the commercial breeding industry center is located there, everything from excellent reputable/responsible to bottom of the barrel in the breeding community. I'd put up notices in the libraries, get the word out among the veterinarians, tack and feed stores are another place. Once the dog park is set up, then see if they would let you put up notices. Our dog park has a website and that would be something you could utilize if the Springfield park has one. It is just going to take some time and patience to get the word and feelers out and see IF there is any interest.
