They have lots of walking group farther north than us. We live very close to the border of Mexico. Very hot and not a lot of people interested in pampering their pooches. Corgis are very rare down here. That's why Ace is popular where ever we go! That and he is so darn cute!!!

We went up to San Antonio this weekend with Ace. We stopped at a doggie park. It was amazing! There were several dogs there both big and small. We were nervous to take Ace off his leash but decided to give it a try. He LOVED IT! He played with big dogs and small dogs. He ran around and made doggie friends! There was agility equipment there and Ace was a natural! He ran up and over the A-frame and several other obstacles. He even jumped over a small hurdle. He had a great time and wore his self out! I told Jim we have got to move! It is a wonderful place for doggie socialization and exercise. I hope we can go back again next time we're in San Antonio!

Corgis love to be loose and free to run around. And they often are much better behaved with other dogs because they haven't got nervous vibes from an attached leash to a handler, to cope with. Corgis very quickly pick up the cue to come when called or in Taylor's case, to stop 'dead' when I call out "hold it."

Of Course, there are many towns that have leash laws, ours being one of them.

Linda - there must be somewhere handy where dogs can exercise off-lead. If not why hasn't any dog club in your region made strenuous efforts to have areas made available. Surely there are numerous examples throughout the USA of more enlightend local Governments/ authorities making allowances for dogs and their owners. Then there is the policing of restricted areas - how officious is that carried out. New Zealand does not have dog parks as such but where I live, all the parks are available for dogs who can be 'controlled' - on or off-lead.

Yes, the place we can have them off lead is in the perimeters of our yards. No city parks allow dogs here and they enforce that.

Yes, dogs in our city can be off lead in the permiters of our yards. City parks have signs up with a picture of a dog and a big black X marked over them.

That's why we loved the doggie park. It was a large fenced in area where you could let your dog play freely. Of course, there were rules. All the owners were very aware of their dogs which helped to prevent any "fights". It would be nice if there were more parks like this one. It was great for Ace to get to play off leash (besides our back yard) and with other dogs as well.

That kind of sign, Linda, is common all over the world. But it wouldn't stop me starting up a petition and a representation to Government to make available areas and parks for proper dog recreation. Start off, by gathering in people who own dogs and form an action committee. I would say, that within a year, you would have what most other places in the USA have.

A no dogs allowed sign would not stop a fiery person like me. But a lot of people would feel embarrassed if 'caught' out. If it is light in your area at say six in the morning - try taking your dog for running around a park at that time - any officials would still be in bed.

Our police officials work around the clock here.

this is an older thread, but I thought I would put this here.

I noticed in yesterday's paper that they are going to try and make our public parks more "dog friendly". Currently, no dogs, even if leashed, are allowed in public parks - even to walk through them with their owners.

The proposed change would allow leashed pets to walk through parks on designated sidewalks or walkways that connect with other sidewalks or walkways in a neighborhood.

Pets would still be banned form picnic areas, playgrounds, pavillions and athletic fields. I had always thought it would have been nice to take my dog to my kids sporting events, but that is not allowed.

And Michael, I had to laugh a bit looking back at your last sentence - I guarantee you that not all officials/police in our city are snoozing in the morning - they are out at all hours of the day doing their job.

Anyway, I was wondering if others city park rules are similar to these rules?

In my area you can walk a dog in a park as long as it is on a leash and you clean up after your dog. That really is not dog friendly there to say you cant walk your dog through a park! Why else go to a park? LOL!

It was in the paper this summer that a guy got a ticket for walking his dog through a park(on leash) - he took a shortcut home Pet friendly city.

wow, that stinks...I would have been mad... I totally would rather see people getting tickets for not picking up after their dogs - especially in my neighborhood ( especially certain people who i see walk their dog in the same spot and NEVER pick up! grrr) but i digress!

Glad they are changing the rules to be a little bit more pet friendly.
