Corgi walking group - 08-30-2006, 05:02 AM

Just in case, a 'guest' to this site happens to own a Corgi and lives in the Wellington region in New Zealand, here is the Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Group's (WWCW) next walk and afternoon tea:

Sunday, Sept 3, 1.30pm start from Silverstream Bridge to Stokes Valley along the Hutt River trail. Flat, mainly all-weather track, Corgis allowed off-lead. Take afternoon tea in pack for stop enroute. Swimming areas for Corgis. Should return to car park before 4pm. Any cancellation will be broadcast on Newstalk ZB and The Breeze. For any further info, tel Michael Romanos, 04 528 5861 or 021 614 821.

Michael:

I am jealous! Sure wish we had that type of an activity around! I may take the idea and try to find a walking group!

I lived in Cleveland OH 13 years and they have a wonderful metropark system. That would have been a great location to do that!

Pardon me if I plaguerize your idea!

Susan,

if you go to this site: www.meetup.com you can see if there are any Corgi groups in your area, or indicate that you want to be contacted if one starts up. Might want to check out this site.

There are some dog groups in my town, but no Corgi ones. My last puppy trainer knows of someone who owns a Corgi so I may get her name from her.

Linda, thank you so much for that link!

I found out there are two corgi people wanting to do walks, although they are 2 hrs drive away. But, I have signed up to be contacted if anyone closer logs in.

Thanks again, this is something I was wanting to do for a long time.

Hey - I just tried that website and there are already 2 people interested in a corgi walk - both about 45 miles away though. I may email them.

I just had a thought, I bet our Vets office would be happy to pass along a note with our name & number etc to other corgi patients. Or better yet, why not make up a small flyer or card and ask to leave it where other owners can pick one up.

They have a big daschund one in my town, maybe I should disguise Cody and take him to that one - aren't there some people who think that Corgis are daschunds??

Susan - if you are interested in starting a walking group, contact me for a run-down of ideas on how to go about it.
Corgis over seven months old can easily walk/run for two hours-three hours (though until a Corgi is 12 months old, I wouldn't suggest too many regular wallks of this distance). The walk/run part of our group meeting on Sunday should take around 75 minutes, then you add in afternoon tea, Corgi time play - fighting and wrestling and chasing - and swimming time then you've got a good two and a half hours.
Corgis go better with Basset Hounds rather than Dachshunds because Bassets can walk - a bit slower, granted - for just as long as Corgis can.
A group of Corgis walking basically together, catches the eyes of the public. It's difficult not to be amused by the sight. And of course you get all this mingling of different colours and tailed Cardis and tailless Pems and a whole bunch of erect ears and happy faces.
But an extended walk with just two or three Corgis is a great experience for handler and dog.
