Corgis and Ferrets? - 10-31-2006, 06:02 AM

We have 4 ferrets in our home, who are in a cage when we are away but are generally out and about when we're home. They are typically confined to "their" room, and it wouldn't necessarily be any problem to keep them and a dog seperated. I was wondering, though, if anyone has experience with corgis and ferrets. Do they get along? Does the dog exhaust itself trying to herd the little bundles of furry energy? Or does it just depend on the dog?

I know of someone from several other corgi list who has ferrets and her corgi. It can work, but she never leaves them unsupervised; the ferrets have their space which the corgi is not really allowed into. She has a couple of ferrets that get along well with her corgi and others not so well I think from the stories she has related. Much of it will be an individual dog/ferret thing.

I have never owned a Corgi that wanted to kill a cat but they sure wanted to chase them - apart from my current fellow. But it seems obvious that some Corgis might treat a ferret the same way they might treat a rat/mouse - one tug of their neck and they're history - but it is up to the owner to make the right overtures from the very first introduction between a ferret and a Corgi. Taylor was "instructed' from almost day one in regard to the pet rabbit we had. Our rabbit was no slouch - he could hold his own. Anyway, Taylor and the rabbit played with one another (they had many great games) and drank water from the stream together for as long as the rabbit lived.

I walked into a Petsmart about a year ago with Tucker on his leash. We were coming around a corner of an isle when we ran into a woman w/ a ferret on a leash. No... I wasn't hallucinating!

Anyway.... Tucker kind of stood there and looked at the ferret, didn't make a sound. The ferret started climbing on Tucker as if to play. Finally Tuck started sniffing the ferret, did the play bow, and rolled over and let the ferret climb on him.

So no immediate reaction to the ferret but I suspect (after watching the way he bashes his sister Lulu around) he would eventually think the ferret was just another playmate. I would be afraid if left unsupervised, he might get rough. I suspect a ferret could inflict some damage with bites if prompted.
