Health scare.... -

Miss Gambler became sick today after eating some of my pound cake. I did not think twice about giving her some, but the poppy seeds are toxic. So take note out there. She appears to be shaking it off. I forget at times that she is totally dependent on me to know these things, and I let her down.

Did she throw up? or what symptoms did she have? That is scary, of course. How much did she consume?

This came out of the blue, she is having one upset tummy after another. She will have to be watched for the next 48 hrs, and the upset tummy problem needs to stop soon or she will need and IV, dehydration, etc. Her energy level has improved so I'm sure she will be just fine, but I am kicking myself.

Cheesecake??? We love California Cheesecake Factory!!! Miss Gambler is doing just fine, and I learned a valuable lesson, just as you did with the cheesecake. It does not help that they are such beautiful beggers, though.

Glad to hear she's improving. We can all take a lesson here in being more conscientious/cautious about what foods we share with our corgis and how much people food we give them. Hope Miss Gambler is all better very soon.

My husband says all the time that Miss Gambler is my mini-me, and he is right, I could not have had a child that is more like me than she is, but it is times like these that I am forced to remember that she really is a dog and she can't eat or do everything that I do.

Dogs love most of what we love - and its at least as bad for them as it it for us. Don't forget Corgis are very small and we are comparatively large. So a piece of cheesecake or round cake cointaining multiple ingredients that are a no no for Corgis. is like us having the entire cake-plus all in one go.
Hope Msss Gambler is ok and it was just the cake and nothing more lasting or difficult to pin down.
I didn't see it but a British programme series on difficult dog problems being solved - and most of these problems are worse than anything shown on the Cesar Millan show - had one segment showing a woman who had several little dogs of one breed and she treated them all like she would her own human children - feeding them off the dining table with straight out human food - main meal and dessert. Of course it is pure dog abuse.

Miss Gambler's mom, Don't beat yourself up too badly here. As long as a lesson was learned and Miss Gambler is ok, then there is no harm no foul. I am very careful how much human food i offer to Dillon. When i give him a real big treat ( not daily either i might add) i give him a piece no larger than a dime - It can be very difficult to not give into the begging face. But I do know that his weight plays a big part in his overall health and I want him around for a long time healthy and happy, so i don't give in. I did not know, however, that poppy seeds are toxic to dogs, so that is something i have learned here. I wonder how many other things are out there that we dont think about that are toxic- the ones i know of are raisins and grapes, chocolate, caffeine, and onion... anyone know of others?
I hope that Miss Gambler feels better very soon.
Emilie

Miss Gambler's Mom - So glad to hear that she is doing better. Don't beat yourself up to badly over this - things happen and as long as we learn from the experience - good has come from it. Also the double whammy of good is that now everyone on Go Corgi knows not to feed their precious pupsthat food because I didn't know it either so a BIG thanks for sharing. Also, seafood is not good for your dogs - shrimp, etc. One day when I was at my Vet's, this couple brought in their little dog sick sick sick - come to find out it was caused from them feeding him shrimp.

It may be a good idea to have a list of do not feed items. I know there has been other threads but one dedicated by title would be a resource. Sort of "keep it all in one place type thing. "

I appreciate everyone's good wishes, and I also believe that a constant thread somewhere, one that can always be updated and never lost, would be great, and possibly save one of our friends one day. Miss Gambler was up ALL night, therefore, so was I. I just spent the night working and finally managed to get her settled and comfortable on the sofa surrounded with pillows and she fell asleep. I think that we are out of the woods, her system needs to purge more of the toxins. I am so used to sharing whatever snack, or whatevever that I have that I did not even think when I gave her pieces of my cake. She had shown such interest when it was cooking, standing at the stove and sniffing, that I could not have kept her from it. But I have since found out that poppy seeds affect respiratory and neurological, and severely so. They get a morphine-like effect. I do believe that I will truly start thinking of ingredients now. She gets her food, and vitamins and supplements, and her chew treats, but it is so hard to not not give her our food when she just lights up when she smells it. You guys know what I am talking about.
