Delilah's Mom,
My brother-in-law drives a truck... he uses to be on long hauls but now is away only a week at a time. He says a lot more drivers than we would think have a pet with them - some for company and a few for protection.
I would think when you are gone for two or more weeks from home it would be nice to have a "friend" with you.

Tucker as of late will come out of his gated area where he and Lulu sleep, stretch and let out this awful groan! It's the funniest sound. Well, as of yesterday Lulu has started to do the same thing.
They are so pathetic, you would think they just came in from a night of very heavy work.'My puppy sitter calls Lulu Miss Creaky bones. She has been snuggling up with her 5 year old terrier mix and just sighs and groans until she spoons him in just the right position for her.
Unfortunately, Charlie, the terrier mix is growling the whole time. Does it deter my Lulu? Heck no! I think it encourages her. Old Charlie has a very soft spot for Lulu.
God forbid any of the other dogs at day care try that with him!

Susan
Miss Lulu is a charmer! Old Charlie never had a chance.
The Girls will imitate each other sometimes. If one bows the other will - Em's not much of a talker but she does grunt and snort when she has a stuffed toy in her mouth and wants us to play.
As I've said b4 she isn't much of a lap sitter - prefers to be at my feet. Last night when Chloe got down Em wanted up. She doesn't jump either ... puts her front paws on my legs and I have to lift her. It took longer for me to lift her up and her to get comfy than she stayed LOL
hummmm Em doesn't talk, jump, cuddle, .... if something (God forbid) ever happen to her I could just bring in the corgi pillow from the car, cover it with hair and put it behind my chair and call it Emma .... just kidding LOL

I think my Cody and your Tucker make the same sounds in the morning in regards to the stretching and groaning.

Well, we just got back from the vet. Delilah has been spayed and her hernia fixed. They said she is a "champ", doing great. As for the grunting, he asked me this morning if she did it alot.....apparently his corgis grunt when they are out running and playing! So it is a corgi thing! LOL

Yes, Liam grunts like a pig, and makes a bark/growl thing that we call the "wolverine noise" when he's playing "mean" with Daddy. No mouth contact, but sounds mean anyway.
Interesting cat discussion. I have one declawed cat and one not. I had the big manx mix declawed as an adolescent because he was destroying my furniture and carpet and drapes despite water squirts, yelling and thrown tennis balls. He would destroy things when I was at work. I couldn't keep him if I couldn't stop him. He recovered from his surgery within a week, still kept all dogs in line, very successfully hunted snakes, rabbits, lizards, mice, voles, birds and insects until we moved to town. I adore the King kitty and would do it again. He'll be 10 this year.
The Katrina kitty came with claws, never claws anything if we keep them trimmed, has the sturdy respect of Liam. I think its an individual cat choice not taken lightly, but sometimes necessary.

Are you sure the grunting isn't reverse sneezing? Ponzo reverse sneezes when he is excited and running about with a toy in his mouth. It sounds very similar to a grunt, I just realized that now!

Nope, this is definately a pig grunt. Having been involved with raising pigs ONCE I will never forget the sound! She mostly does it when I am holding her or when she is going to bed at night. She also does that "wolverine" sound when she is playing rough with me and I never have to worry about being bit. She learned real early that biting will earn a high pitched whine (like a hurt puppy). Delilah seems to be a very sensitive dog - doesn't want to hurt anyone, but loves to play rough when given the chance. She settles down really quickly when told "No ma'am".

By the way - she is getting along great with the other dogs in our home - an older BIG black lab, 2 older chihuahuas - and with the cats. So funny to watch her reaction around the cats......I don't think she has figured out what they are yet! LOL (and yes, they are declawed!)

Yes, it's normal.
Cats don't have to be declawed to get along with dogs. I have several cats here and have had cats all but a couple of years that I've owned dogs. I've not yet had a cat scratch a dog.
However, IMO, I think a cat needs it's claws if it lives with multiple dogs, Just in case...

Dudley doesn't pig grunt, but he does do this sound that is best described as Chewy from Star Wars. He also does the groaning that LuLu and Tucker do when he wakes up in the morning. It cracks me up everytime!
