Exclamation Labrador & Corgi Taffy, save me from certain venomous snake bite! - 02-21-2007, 01:00 PM

I have not posted for a long while now....but not for lack of wanting to do so. Thank you for reminding me that I still belong to the worldwide corgi community.

Here is a little story that might just interest some of you. Two evenings ago, but after dark, I was alerted by both my black labrador, Paddy and my tri-colour corgi, barking in a most perculiar and "different" way. They were both right by but outside my front glass sliding door and seemed to be VERY agitated. On further terrifying investigation [for me!!] my brain registered AFRICAN PUFF ADDER!!!!! ENORMOUS !! GAPING MOUTH AS IF TO ATTACK!!

The human "fight or flight" mechanism kicked in and adredalin pumped so furiously that in one swift movement I grabbed my little corgi, shoved him inside, but then battled to get the labrador away from the angry, threatening snake. Eventually Paddy came inside trembling. I was lame with shock as I contemplated the outcome had my two beloved dogs not warned me of the enormous snake. I would have stood with my bare feet right on the adder and in South Africa most snake bites are inflicted by the VERY poisonous puff adder, which is a very sluggish, lazy reptile - but lethal.

I can only thank God for protecting both by dogs, my siamese cat (who was fascinated by the creature, but I left her to her own kitty devices-she has 9 lives!!).... as well as my life! At present we in South Africa are experiencing an awful heat wave as a result of a tropical cyclone off the coast of Mozambique. There are snakes everywhere as a result of this extraordinary heat. A large Cape Cobra was killed in an ofice block here in the city centre of Kimberley yesterday!

Normally I tell the world I live in paradise.....but now my paradise has got its share of serpents slitherinmg around as well!

Roll on Winter!

Regars to all,
Marge

Happy endings, that's what I like. And this story was one of these. The only thing snake-like we have in New Zealand are eels and our river eels are not biters and only one kind of sea eel could cause some minor damage to a person (or a dog) - and that is the congo eel - they usually are a high sea serpent. We have a native eel in our Wi Tako Stream and we feed him/her regularly with minced meat or small bits of chicken Chunky Dog Roll. The eel is 20 years old with a 20 year old body length and can live up to 80 years.

If my Taylor spotted a slithering snake or a lizard he would most definitely let me and everyone else know about it and I would not expect him to confront it.

EEEEWWWW! If there is one thing in this world I hate the most, it is snakes! I will watch shows on them to no end, but when confronted with one just freeze and burst into tears. Thank god for those dogs, puff adders are no joke!
A lot of people I know have visited Australia and said it's great, but you'll never see me there because I have watched Steve Irwin's world's deadliest snakes show about a ga-jillion times and like 8 of the 10 are in Australia! No thanks! My fear is too great and I'm not much for long plane ride either. Strange I know, but I guess deathly fears will do that to ya! HA!

Well hugs and extra biscuits to your two pups Marge!!!

I have lived in Australia briefly and was terrified of snakes - never saw one.
I did run into a deadly green mamba in Tanzania - that's a bite you don't survive either, and once when we were kids we were confronted by a rattle snake here in Ontario.

We confront more of the 4 legged variety of wildlife here in Toronto - we seem to be having lots of fox sightings and chasing this winter!

Ok so australia has the most of the world's top deadliest snakes (including the sea snake) the only poisonous octopus ( blue ring) that can kill a man
Poisonous fish ( stone fish, box jellyfish, man o'war jellyfish, sting rays), poisonous mammal ( Platypus)... then there are the things that are not poisonous but deadly, great white sharks, salt water crocodiles...

I will enjoy Australia in photos and on TV - it looks so beautiful but i would be to scared to go there...LOL

I can deal with all of that stuff . . . it's the enormous spiders that scare me away!
