I think it boils down to two things-the owners who mishandle the dogs and the breeders who are irresponsible about placements and their breeding program.
Again, I have meet way too many good dogs with responsible breeders and owners, to say it's a breed specific problems. In our area, my kennel club is trying to work with the community using an AKC program called K9 Ambassadors. Teaching responsible dog ownership, safety around dogs and showing that it's not a specific breed. We actually had to ban one person's dogs from attending-it was a welsh springer spaniel! Owners have a great deal to do with bad and horrendous dog behavior. But the case against Pit Bulls and a few other breeds worldwide are pretty overwhelming. It would be boring for me to quote facts and figures regarding this.

This thread is a little old, but I just came across it and couldn't resist commenting on it. Before Waeryn, I got this pit/lab puppy. She was a free puppy that I came across and I know I shouldn't have said yes, but I couldn't help it (I really wanted a Corgi, but I didn't think that my bf was actually saving up for one!) She was so cute. I live in an apartment, which is NOT a good idea for a puppy like that, especially the lab side of her. I tried so hard with her, but as she grew I realized how unfair it would be to her if I kept her. She was super active and I just didn't have enough space for her. I ended up giving her to someone that I knew who has a lot of property for her to roam around on. She is doing really good there, by the way! ANYWAY, what I'm trying to get to is that once I got her I did a TON of research on the APBT, because I know a lot of people think they're monsters (my mom included, sadly). I didn't belive all of the stuff that people say about them, but I wanted to research them anyway. I found out that so many things that people say about them are myths. Also, that many of the "pit bulls" that attack people are either trained to, abused, or starved. Because HUMANS use these dogs for horrible reasons, the beed suffers! I have a friend that just HATES pit bulls and wont listen to anything that anyone has to say in their favor. It just makes me mad!

way back when I was a little girl, my grandparents owned a "toto" dog (like in the wizard of oz) My grandpa took her for a walk and a pit bull was unleased in an owners yard and took off and grabbed Toto and shook her violently. My grandpa pried the dogs jaws off of her and ran home. Both had lost a lot of blood and were a mess. Toto went to the emergency office and was greatly injured but lived. My grandpa went to the hospital for stitches. I remember Toto was never the same again, and I think her life was shortened due to the attack. I was too young to understand but I don't know what my grandparents did about the dog's owner. I think they paid all the vet and hospital bills. But now a days the dog would have been put down for attacking another person and dog. I know what to look for if a dog will be friendly or not, but I don't fool around with any breed, it isn't worth the possible outcome.
