4H with a Corgi - 10-19-2005, 04:45 PM

Hi everyone. Wanted to share with you that my 10-year-old son started 4H with our Corgi last night and he LOVED it. I already had her somewhat trained to just sit and lay down, but he is taking it further and was really, really excited to be in the class with her. Of course, when she started to get a lot of attention from others, he loved it more. He later told me, "Mom, I was really proud of Lucy!"

Hi Jamie
What is 4H? If I knew I'm sure your message would make more sense.

Hi Michael,

You don't have 4H where you live? 4H is an agricultural program for kids (usually from 4th grade through age 18). We have been involved in 4H with our goats, but this is our first round with dogs. 4H is a very active group to be involved with and it's a great thing for kids. It teaches them responsibility (they are usually VERY involved in county fair) and they get to meet and interact with lots of other kids their age and work with animals. It was the best thing we ever found for our kids!

Hi Jamie
No, New Zealand doesn't have anything like a programme for teaching responsibility to kids through animal management.
It sounds like a great idea though. I am not a country person but NZ still has its A&P (Agricultural and Pastural) shows in country areas where young people are involved in various activities - but not through any programme such as 4H.
You never said the age of Lucy, nor why exactly did she get such a lot of attention. Is it unusual to have a dog in this programme or is it because Corgis are a rareity?

Jamie
I am just finding my way around the website and found this an interesting conversation. My brother was involved in 4H in the US some sixty years ago with dairy cows. It is an excellent way for youngsters to get involved and develop a work ethic. I would like to find out how your son is doing.

I grew up in 4H, I loved it. I raised pigs, goats, chickens, rabbits, and horses. Every year we would look forward to going to fair for a week, always one of the best weeks of the year. I never showed dogs, we had a cocker spaniel at the time who was pretty old, now I have my little corgi puppy to keep me busy!

Jamie,

4H is so great for kids! My brother & I were in 4H - he was also a Future Farmer and still has a garden every year. We didn't have a dog training class back then - but it sure sounds fun for your son. Keep us posted on their progress - will there be something at the state fair to show off their dogs?
