always hungry? - 07-12-2007, 10:07 PM

my puppy is almost 7 months old and gets fed 3/4 cups of dog food 3 times a day. Now, i think this is actually a lot of food for him but he always finishes his food in a matter of seconds. He doesn't seem to be overweight in that i can feel his ribs and see his waist. Should i increase his portions or am i feeding him an okay amount?

If he's not fat, yes, that is ok. In fact if he's skinny he could have a bit more. What food are you feeding him?

It's quite common for corgis to darn near inhale their food. I have several who are very fast eaters.

I woild definitely say that this is too much for a Corgi - a cup and a half per day of puppy food sounds more reasonable. But there are different brands of puppy food which contains different fat contents or weight producing items of food. If you are feeding your pup with premium or super premium dry food (kibble) the packaging should have a chart for recommended quantities per full meal per day. It is recommended to give your puppy three -four meals a day maybe until nine months old then reduce to two-three, dividing a full meal into two-three-four portions. I would supplement this with a daily large biscuit and once weekly, a meaty raw beef or lamb bone of the type that won't splinter. Most puppies/dogs seem never satisfied and always hungry and on the lookout for food.

That's a good food, I wouldn't change it. And 3/4 a cup at a time is not alot. I had an adult corgi who could eat 1 cup of kibble in less than 45 seconds.

I've got one corgi here at age 2 1/2 that eats 2 1/2 cups of kibble per day. She's thin and needs the food. I've fed up to 3 cups to a corgi per day. It depends on the dog. You have to go by the way the dog looks and feels not by what someone thinks is enough or too much food. I would not worry about the amount unless the dog is getting fat.

Well my 9 month old Cardigan girls are getting at least that much and I'm having problems keeping weight on them. They're also getting frozen Bil-Jac and a Nature's Variety "patty" and they're staying lean and muscled. My four month old Cardi boy and three 10 week old puppy girls are getting close to 2 cups a day and their weight is just fine.

Recommended amounts on a dog food package are going to be for much more. I just checked a bag of puppy kibble here and at that age, 2 1/2 to 3 cups was the recommended amount.

Well, you and your Corgi are lucky because there aint much better food than Royal Canin on the market. Now RC is noted for producing 'lean' food - and many people find it necessary to give their dogs more than they would if fed many other products. As I said go by the producers recommmendations which are comprehensively displayed by RC - and if this falls short ( a Corgi pup should be a little chubby) then increase the measure accordingly.
I woild also add a little cooked fresh meat (especially ox/cattle/sheep hearts) or fresh from frozen meat and a table spoon or two of cooked brown rice - these two items are bulk producing and the meat is especially tasty. And a Corgi loves TASTE. Maybe that is what your Pem is lacking and therefore projects a message of dissatisfaction rather than hunger.

Hills Science which is a more fattening food for dogs than is Royal Canin, recommmends that for their puppy food medium bites, a 15 pound dog should have 1.3 cups to 2.0 cups per day. Now you would reduce these quantities if you are also adding supplement food to the pup's meal/s.

Royal Canin is an excellent food but not all foods agree with every puppy. You may want to try switching to another premium food and see if it satisfies him more. Also, have you checked him for worms?

thanks for all the responses so far. yea, he is worm free according to the vet. the vet also said that he's in very good shape/health/weight/etc. I guess my corgi should be fine. poor guy licks the empty bowl every so often hoping there'd be more food in it though

If the vet says he's fine, then there's no need to worry. It's typical of corgis to think they're always hungry and always be looking for more food. So he's just being a typical corgi!!
