Fruits and veggies - 07-19-2007, 08:45 PM

I wanted to start giving Rocko fresh fruits and veggies as nummies (treats). Is this a good idea?? He's going to be 11 weeks Monday. Any suggestions on good ones or known fruits and veggies that are a real winner.

Thanks!!
Linda

Linda:

Chip & Dale both love fresh fruits and veggies. Their favorite is fresh strawberries but they also like banana, apple, green beans, carrots and so much more. Please remember not to feed grapes.

Fruit and veggies are good. But too much of any one veggie or fruit at any one time is not good. For example several pieces of broccoli is good but a bowl full - oh no. I always give Taylor some supplements with his daily meal and these usually include veggies. With dry food he gets 10-20 percent of his total meal in supplements. Veggies given raw are best apart from potato.
Take care with dried fruit - too much sugar etc to give too many daily.
As for grapes - any members of the family are a nono - raisins and sultanas. Other fruit that is a nono is avocardo. With veggies, onions, mushrooms are among a very small array that are toxic to dogs - though it would take more than a few pieces to kick in adversely - that is why garlic (a member of the onion family) given as a small portion is very good for dogs but an overload of it renders it toxiic to dogs.

Linda, that is a sound idea. I give Rosie small fruit and vege treats and she enjoys some more than others. Carrot, as long as it is sweet, is a favourite, as is apple and banana.

Colby goes bananas for bananas, doesnt much care for carrots or green beans, might eat brocoli if he feels like it...and one time, played really cutely with a cooked dropped mushroom from a sandwich but wouldnt eat it...but boy was he funny to watch..nudging it with his nose, barking at it when it just layed there and wouldnt play back....i knew about the onions and grapes but was unaware of mushrooms...i'll have to keep that in mind as we have them often in the house....thanks for the tip...

Duchess used to gobble up bananas but doesn't like them anymore. I gave her a cherry tomato, she didn't know what to make of it. I kept urging her on and she finally chomped it down. Remember Macadamia nuts are also a big no/no. There is a list in the archives of all the foods that should be avoided.

I heard from somewhere that raw greenbeans were not good for dogs either but I haven't looked into it at all. Does anyone know if they are or arn't?

There are different types of beans but I don't believe any of the usual kind such as round, string and broad, are harmful - and as I said, a few given daily, as either fresh beans or fresh from frozen, are beneficial as per any of the other veggies.

Never heard that and never had any problems as a result of feeding them.
