Clinton retires - 04-10-2007, 02:17 AM

This could probably interest no one on Go Corgi but myself, here goies:
Seven year old Clinton, the American born father of my Pem, Taylor, has retired from the showring.
Clinton is a New Zealand, Australian and Candadian conformation champion.
He won his Canadian title with ease at only 10 months of age and he actually had 10 American points including majors towards being an American champion. But his new owner, Lesley Chalmers wanted Clinton with her in NZ. His Australian title was won in a seven shows stint. Last week, Clinton gained his 50th New Zealand Championship Certificate to claim yet another title - NZ Grand Champion. This from only 63 appearances at shows in NZ. He also won in NZ three Best In Shows (all breeds), four BIS (specialty shows), nine Reserve BIS (all breeds). Last week, Clinton was beaten for Best of Breed by one of his grand daughters. If you want to see a pic of Clinton (Boitano President of Merthyr) go to visit Lesley's website Index2
A litter sister of Taylor lives in Canada and is a Canadian champ and she has produced some beautiful pups of her own.

Very impressive career for a very worthy dog. I hope he enjoys his life of "leisure."

Congratulations to Taylor's dad. He must be very proud and you too.

I, of course, am jealous because Taylor's Dad can retire and unfortunately, that is many years off for me.....

Yes, I want to come back as a dog into a home that treasures it's pets as much as those of us on this list!

Interesting Michael to see Clinton's kennel club name- Cindy was brought up in a village very near to Merthyr here in Wales.

I cannot get the link to work = all I get is an ad for Harry Potter

Laura - Lesley would have got the kennel name of Merthyr straight from that village of the same name - unless there is a meaning to Merthyr.

I gave you the wrong website address for Clinton and co. Try this:
merthyrnz.homestead.com

Clinton was wanted for more overseas campaigns etc but Lesley loves him too much to let him out of her sight again. And this from a woman her owns a dozen or so Pems at present.

Debbie - Clinton's leisure time will probably include more occasions when he sires pups. Lesley was unable to compete with Clinton at our national show ( national champs) becaise up until late last year, she was on the executive of the NZ Kennel Club and executive members are regarded as potential influencing factors for judges judging at the national show.

That's a bugger when one has a position such as that - one doesn't get to show off their own dogs; appearance of impropriety and all that which is why I didn't have the opportunity to show to her when she judged last time here.

Michael- that link does not work either

Merthyr is a big town- in the 19th century it was the biggest town in Britain due to the Industrial revolution- their Ironworks were world renowned- downhill since then and been a bit depressed since the coal mines closed.

Laura - third time lucky. Go to Index2

Debbie - Of course it is unfair. Someone else could handle your dog/s at a show in which you are an executive member of. By rights the judge is not suppose to see even the catalogue. But on the other hand there is enough anecdotal evidence to say that some judges may favour a handler or do something that is reciprocal with another judge who is also a show ring handler etc. Anyway, I really hate bringing all this kind of thing up because it is a reason why conformation showing can be like a witches stew and we all like to really think that everyone one has a fair go at all times. Most of the time they probably do and any favouritism perceived is all in the mind of the loser/s.
But it is tough when you have a specialist judge from overseas and you miss out because of all this. With agility, the judge is unable to influence the outcome very much because it is all there for everyone to see - and new technology is going to render agility judging with even less influence.

Thanks for the link- as I suspected Cindy's breeders are mentioned and if your dog is descended from their dogs then we are related- well our dogs are anyway.
Some of the corgis in the photos are so like Cindy.

I am thrilled that Taylor is related to Cindy and I am pleased that you finally got through to the Merthyr website - it wasn't the usual website address either. I thought it was stored in my memory bank. I think Clinton is really something. He is a very laid back Pem and not easy to handle (ie get the best out of) in the show ring.

I didn't say it was unfair, just the price or trade off of being involved in dog show hierarchy at that level.

Laura,

I don't know this particular "hubby" of Cindy's - however, I do know a few of the Salvenik corgis of both breeds. My best guess would be they made some really pretty corgi babies.
