NZ national show - 09-18-2007, 08:27 PM

The New Zealand national show is on Sept 28-30 not far from where I live. Once again my Taylor is the only Corgi agility dog. In the conformation showing, there are only 21 Pems and 6 Cardis. The judge for the Corgis is Leif-Herman Wilberg of Norway.
I'll be watching the Corgis who are first in the ring on the Friday. At 12.30pm, Taylor will be presented with the trophy and prizes as NZ canine pet of the Year. He was runner-up for this award in 2005 and last year couldn't enter because I was the organiser of the awards. As handler of the winner, I'll be invited to the official luncheon on the Friday. Perhaps I'll have a word or two with Wilberg.

Congradulations to Taylor for being voted NZ Pet of the Year 2007! What criteria is there for that honor? Of course I know and love Taylor from your postings and I think there must be an eloquent nomination paper submitted. Is there public service or other requirements for the title?

Jane - the NZ Kennel Club invites all of NZ to enter in the awards. Pet of the Year is one of three categories. The entry is on an official form and I wrote a fairly eloquent 500 words on Taylor's achievements and services in the community diring the past four years and added a couple of things he will be doing in the immediate future. A photo was included with the entry. Corgis are easy to promote as most of them are outgoing and friendly and intelligent. A pet dog is a pet dog but Taylor has quite a few strings to his bow that sets him apart from most other dogs.

Surprise, surprise - my wife and youngest son says they will come to see Taylor get his presentation. My son won't need to skip school because it will be during the school holidays. I'll have to dress up a little - not in my usual agility gear.

At work today, my wife had to shout (provide) everyone morning tea because they had read that her Corgi and won NZ Canine Pet of the Year. My wife works for the NZ Conservation organisation.

Taylor refused to put his ears up for the photographers and the TV camera. He was at his keenest when meeting up with some of the Corgis involved in the conformation showing amd just loved mixing with his cousins - one of which won Best In Show at a pre-national championship show held the day before the nationals.

In agility, Taylor did not do so well. He raced fast in his six events but in three of them he knocked down one rail (Damn those high hurdles for mini dogs in NZ) and in another event he decided to stay at the top of the A-frame (in NZ it approaches 7 feet high) and admire the view before jumping off and missing the contact.
