Exclamation A sign from above? - 10-14-2006, 06:55 AM

This is a wierd story that happened to me last week. I was at work talking about looking for a corgi and a friend of mine was suggesting I look for a different type of dog when something totally wierd happened..!

I work at a petstore and I don't have a corgi yet. A lot of the new employees are dog lovers; one girl's mother is even a breeder. I asked one of the new guys who works in my department could he find me a corgi from one of his breeder friends. He said sure though he doesn't like corgis very much. I went into detail about how I loved them and yada-yada but he kept suggesting other dogs.

I kid you not, just a second later a woman walks into the store with a corgi trotting along side her!

Corgis are really rare to see at my store. I've seen kittens, cats, rabbits and yes, even a monkey! but it's really rare to see a corgi. Let's just say I've been there since last year December and the first corgi I saw was in July of this year!

Bad thing was... about ten minutes later a customer came over to tell me the dog I was just playing with took a huge dump in the back of the store and the owner was cleaning up.

Dewey, you asked before for some info regarding breeders in your area. Did you check the links that were provided and did you get to talk with any of them. Why does your friend not like Corgis? and who are his "breeder friends" are they Corgi Breeders?

if you are serious about getting one, make sure you go to someone who has several years experience in breeding them and does the necessary tests on both parents before she/he breeds them. You want a pup that has at least a good chance to have a healthy life(though nothing can be guaranteed), but it helps with healthy parents to start with. Make sure you get a breeder that shows interest in who you are and your lifestyle so she can match up the best pup for you.

Does your friend's "breeder friends" breed more than one breed of dog? What kind do they breed?

Don't give up on the idea of corgi rescue. It is possible to get a younger dog, if you look around. There's alot to be said for a dog past the puppy stage of needing housebreaking, chewing and digging everywhere, and is an all out terror. I've done it both ways. I adopted an 8 year old corgi (who is the best dog ever), and bought a puppy from a breeder. My 9 month old puppy still does alot of bad stuff. He's beautiful, but what a terror. Best of luck.

You are so very right Shelly Dewey, my last Corgi was a Rescue dog and she was wonderful!. I got her when she was around 2 and had her for 11 1/2 years until she passed away last December. She was a great Corgi - so that is definitely another avenue for you. You can go on line to find the Corgi Rescue group for your area/region - or Go on www.petfinder.com and click on breed and then get to Corgis - there are many out there.

Have you gone to an Agility Compotitision???? I have seen so many Corgis' just by going to an agility composition. Here is a link to a list where you can get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. http://www.pembrokecorgi.org/memberlistaction.cfm

I'll try to answer all questions accordingly. I'm new to this so if I say something foolish please don't hit me ^_^;;;.

Remember I asking about breeders a few months ago. I was very serious about getting a corgi back then. I did all of my proper research and I decided that I was not fit to have a dog; that's why I disappeared. I am living with my family still and there is just not enough space for another animal. Since then I've made plans to move out into my own place with more space where I'll be able to own a dog.

One of my friends has contacted a breeder out of state. Through him I am asking all of the questions I need to ask just so I know what kind of dog I am getting. I believe I did the right thing but not getting a dog in the past. I think I am still doing the right thing by doing my proper research and by asking a ton of questions - hopefully, I'm not being a pest. If I am... hopefully they understand. ^_^;

I guess I worded that wrong. I'm not really sure if he personally has breeder friends or if he's just so 'in-the-know' that he can name breeders he's read about off the top of his head. One girl I work with, Anne, her mother breeds chihuahuas.

Corgimom gave me a list of breeders a while back. I emailed a few of them but I got no response. I didn't email them a second time because at that time I decided I shouldn't own a dog.

You guys mention rescue dogs might have a few problems -- I have never owned a dog before. I think that would be a challenge for someone like me to have to deal with.

I am trying to do my best by doing the right thing. Every day I'm doing research, just hoping I'm making the right decision. I compare owning a dog to having a baby; it really is just that complicated and life-changing!

I glad I can come here and not face 'experts' with rude attitudes. I've been on different animal forums (for fish and hamsters ^_^) where I was basically yelled at and talked down to. So far I've been having a wonderful time here.

Here's a picture of the corgi I selected from the breeder my friend found. He spoke to two different breeders and chose this one. Out of five dogs, I picked this one.

Getting a dog SHOULD be just like having a baby, one that you cant drop off at the pound or give away at the first sign of issues. ( not saying you would- just an overall assessment of what i have seen so many places lately) So many people rush to get a puppy or kitten when they are not financially ready or dont have stability in their lives, inevitably many of these dogs and cats find their way into the pound , rescue or worse... Just make sure you are ready to provide this pup with a permament home forever.... I wanted a dog as far back as i can remember , i had to wait until i was 36 yrs old to get the puppy i always wanted...it was finally the right time for me when i knew i was able to provide a wonderful and permanent home for my puppy and I was financially stable that no matter what happens I can afford any and all medical issues that might crop up during his lifetime. The committment to the dog is for a lifetime.

Dewey and his littermates are only three weeks old. That gives me a few weeks to buy all of his supplies and toys, puppy proof my home and do even more research. But the anticipation is madenning! I never thought I'd feel this way ever again now that I'm a adult! LOL

EDIT:
I forgot to mention, Corgismom, my friend said he doesn't like corgis because they are mean. I've heard this from two people so far. I've always just felt it was because the dogs they encountered weren't trained properly.

I agree with that as well, nippy and "mean" corgis often were not socialized or trained properly. The more time you can spend in the begining socializing and training the pup, the happier you both will be. Corgi's are bred for herding and therefore have a mind of their own, they can be stubborn and willful, but a well trained and well socialized corgi is an absolute joy- I adore mine, he is a very happy boy who loves everyone he meets...greeting most people with jumps and kisses (we are STILL working on the jumping up thing, unfortunately many people encourage this behavior unknowingly and it is hard when he gets the reinforcement he is looking for every time he jumps up).

The puppy is so darn cute! I dont blame you for being so very excited, a few more weeks to go before you will have your little pup...but the waiting is hard, I remember how i felt when i was waiting for months for my puppy...oh the waiting was the worst...
