Sometimes "we" are the only voice or means of teaching responsible pet interaction and behavior. That doesn't mean we shouldn't correct children or remove our dogs from harms way if the situation warrants (even avoid situations when they are known

), but in the best interest of any future pet that may end up in such children's homes, at least they have one frame of reference for how to do things right. Screaming at them and treating them as disrespectfully as they are behaving is not a good role model or message to send. <IMHO>

these kids are so horrible! I was taught by my parents to take care of all animals since young. I can't imagine how these kids can have no sympathy or love for animals

I have a really quick & bad temper

so usually when something like this happens I will be screaming in their face! I have spoken very seriously to quite a number of irresponsible owners in my neighbourhood for leaving their gates open & letting their dogs roam in the neighbourhood, we nearly knocked down one of my neighbour's GR the other day! I grab the GR by its collar & guided him home & scolded my neighbour for being so careless & almost killing their dog.

I am still fuming to this day & still curse them ever so softly everytime we drive by

Poor Milo, just going out his own door. Some people should not own dogs and I would say your irresponsible landlord is one of those people, and poodles (especially small ones) are aggressive little dogs by nature. Sassy tickles me because when we open the front door she sticks her nose out her doggie door just far enough to check out what is out there then she will back up and wait for me to go out and make sure the coast is clear. We go through this every morning, but once she has been out she will just truck on out her doggie door and even though my yard is fenced I actually walked out my front door when Sassy was only about 3 months old and there stood a bulldog puppy of about 6 months old. I called Sassy back and she came running to me. The bulldog was friendly so I put him out my front gate, but before I could get back to my front door he was already there. My husband was cracking up cause the fence had come loose and that bulldog pup headed straight for it. We fixed the fence and have had no problems since. But I still get dogs coming to my gate that are running loose because of irresponsible owners. I agree I would have to say something nicely to my landlord.

<sigh> No, they aren't. One of the main problems with toy/small breed dogs and aggression is that they aren't trained. With a small breed, many owners excuse or don't correct bad behaviors but they're "just so little" they couldn't hurt a fly." Or many think it is cute for their 5 pound dog to act like a monster. Let a large breed dog behave the same way and it makes newspaper headlines and will most likely be labeled a "pit bull."

Seriously consider informing your landlord regarding the serious legal ramifications for owners who fail to control an aggressive dog. What you can do, depending on the level of cooperation you get: 1. check out you local laws 2. drop a copy of the news article on the owners in California who went to jail and talk with the owners that you take this seriously and will take further action if necessary 3. install an inexpensive video camera at your front door for future evidence 4. make a police report of the incident, so the landlord is on notice and there is a record to avoid retaliation 5. move???? 6. give them a copy of dog training videos/Cesar Milan etc. 7. any other ideas???

We're so sorry you and Milo. Is there a pet trainer near you that has socialization groups, maybe with one with more passive dogs than Milo and then he can work his way up to other dogs as his comfort level/learning experience allows?

Thanks guys for the support for Milo. I'm sure he was traumatized. He squealed! He didn't fight back. That poodle was very nasty! Now, when Milo hears the dog on TV bark, he runs to the front door thinking it's out there. He's a bit more paranoid now.

I wish I can talk to my landlord but I think she a dumb $@%! And of course, she doesn't understand English well. She has always been nice to me but we don't communicate well that's all. She has a couple of dogs and they always bark up a storm so I know she doesn't train them well. She locks them up all the time. And when they're out - no leash! Hah!

Didn't you have to talk with this woman when you signed a lease? or is this a new landlord? I would think she can read english - send her a short friendly letter that states simply that Milo is afraid of dogs and you would appreciate it if she would keep her poodle on a leash and away from Milo.

Linda: We signed the lease with her deceased husband. That's the thing. I will call her and talk to her kids or something (they speak better English).

Miniature Poodles are a breed that Taylor gets along famously with. He meets up with a lot of them at agility competition and sometimes teams up with them in team events. Taylor has not met a nasty Min Poodle yet and for the life of me I cannot recall a Min Poodle being badly behaved ever. In fact, a few weeks ago at the NZ national dog show,Raylor and I met with Elaine and Andre - the Min Poodle. Andre was featured in one of my best stroies in my book Amazing Dog Stories - as a pup he saved Elaine's life which also attracted natinal tv to do a mock up of his actions.
