I had only been home from the hospital after having major surgery for a few days and I was depressed so this Friday night my husband took me for a ride just to get out of the house. It was early evening and we were riding down an old back road when ahead of us was a dog that looked like a beagle from a distance and a little ways behind her was a small puppy with short little legs trying to keep up. My husband stopped the car and I ran to catch the puppy (holding my stomach with a 6 inch incision) and the puppy came right to me. The mother dog ran into the woods and wouldn't come to us. An elderly lady drove by and stopped. She told me that many animals were dropped off in this particular area because it was deserted and no houses close by. Well we took this little pup home. This little pup only weighed a little over a lb. I made him a bed lined with a white sheet that quickly had little red spots all over it because this pup was covered with fleas and pot bellied from worms. The next day, I sent my son to the store to get puppy food and he ran into a friend of his from school. Now my son was excited about this pup and told him the story, bought the puppy food and came home. That night about midnight I got a call from this woman screaming at me that I had stolen her puppy and she wanted it back. Well I tried to persuade her that it wasn't her pup, offered to buy him but nothing worked. That Monday morning, I called animal control and he told me that I had to give the pup back but I could charge her for flea control, vet bills, boarding, and any other expenses I had. I figured up a huge amount and called the lady and told her that I would bring the pup back to her but she had to pay me X amount of dollars. As luck would have it, it was the first of the month so she had money and was willing to pay. I was in tears and so attached to this little boy. Well a friend of ours had a litter of three week old beagle pups and my son came up with the idea of switching puppies and taking her one of those. I agreed. She took one look at that beagle puppy and said it wasn't her dog and she wasn't giving me any money. We happily left, returned the beagle puppy to his mama and we lived happily everafter for almost 15 years so I stole a puppy that I named Digger. As no crime goes without punishment - my punishment is that I loved him so much that I still grieve almost everyday for him and I still miss him so much but God is a loving God and so he sent me Chip to help me through and I would do it all again.

It doesn't sound like that woman was much of a mom anyway. You gave Digger a much better life than he was headed for, and he was lucky to have you (and you him, of course).
