Dewey hoards everything. - 11-29-2006, 08:07 PM

My cat is very odd. He doesn't bother my fish and he doesn't bother my sister's hamster (Foxy Brown). Even when she's rolling around in her hamster ball, he just watches her go, completely uninterested. One night she even escaped and was running around completely vulnerable to a cat-attack but was hurt at all? Nope. Kitty followed her from room to room, sniffing her as she went, but not hurting her.

So I decided to test Dewey. I let him sniff Foxy while I held her in my hand. He was like, "Ok, smells wierd, looks alive. I dun really want it," so then I put her on the carpet.

Yes, this wasn't being very smart but I had to see what Dewey would do. Foxy scurries around a bit and Dewey sniffs and watches her. Suddenly, he picks her up and starts walking towards my bedroom -- He was going to hoard her!

My sister and mother scream, I grab Foxy and put her away and then we all laugh. Everything I put on the floor he takes away and hides under my bed. Ironically enough, the word hamster is derived from the german word hamstern which means 'to hoard'.

That is a bit strange and it must have been a very funny sight after recovering from shock. Afterall, Corgis are not soft mouthed hunting dogs than can pick up game and not puncture them. But it does show that Dewey means the hamster no harm. My Taylor doesn't wish to harm any animal (and loves rabbits and guinea pigs) apart from protecting his territorial rights against certain intruding dogs.

I would still use precaution when introducing him to small animals. Dillon is great with the cats, and fine with other dogs, but smaller animals he shows he wants to give chase...and i am not sure what he would do should he catch one- squirrels really get him going..so i would be careful maybe introduce him to foxy brown when foxy is in her ball so he can sniff but cant bite.
That is funny that Dewey hoards everything...reminds me of my friend's ferret. Cute story with a happy ending, but makes my heart flutter at what could have happened.

Tucker walked smack into a ferret on a leash one day at Petsmart. In a split second I was about to lounge for him thinking he would think the ferret a toy and grab it.

But he stopped, the ferret came to him, sniffed him all over, Tuck just stood there. He had a look on his face as if to say "What the heck is that?"

Finally he started sniffing the ferret back. He gave him a nudge w/ his nose, then was ready to move on. The ferret of course wanted to follow his new buddy!

I'll go with those who advising to err on the side of caution. Among their duties as all round farm dogs was to dispatch vermin (rats, mice, etc.) around the Welsh farmstead. Many today are proficient mousers, killer of voles and moles in the yard. Just a little more to think about.

There is not too many animals in this world that I really hate but rats are at the top of my list.(although I do try to avoid them if they run out in front of me on the road) I would not want my little Chip to put one of those dirty little creatures in his mouth so I would err on the side of caution too. (No offense to people who like these critters please and I realize hamsters are not a rat) I just wouldn't want Chip to touch anything that I wouldn't touch and knowing him, he would be a good mouser. Jasmine has killed a many of them before.

Koda is kind of hard to figure out, when going to places like petsmart he could careless about the hampsters or ferretts and generally gives them a quick sniff and ignores them. Buy having said that he has done a good job of ridding my backyard of now three moles, but I think he does that because he gets to dig without us yelling at him.

If something is bigger than him he becomes very interested and very excited (probably the old herding cows instinct). He does not really like dogs that are smaller than him or the same size but loves big dogs like labs and shepards. In the office building I work in there is a old english sheep dog that he simply adores and will do anything to play with.

I am completely conviced that he thinks that he is that big and is to good or strong to play with the smaller dogs.

When we first got Jackie, we had 2 gerbils (who have since died of old age I miss my boys), and I let Jackie sniff their cage, and them while I was holding them. But she seemed a little too excited about them, so I never took the chance of putting them on the floor, or in their balls. I don't know if she would deliberately have tried to harm them, but they were so little and delicate, I couldn't take the chance. Your sister is a very forgiving person - if you had tried that with one of my sweet boys, you would have been staring at the business end of a hissy fit!

Very funny story, though (since it didn't involve MY pets, and it ended happily). I hope that Foxy Brown was not too terrified. Jackie is a hoarder too, but mostly with her stuff. Sometimes she likes to stash her treats for later. She hides them in the lining of her bed.
