Cindy goes swimming

This happened last Summer.

Sooty, Cindy and I went for one of our favourite walks alongside a fresh water lake. On the way around, being the disorganised person I am, I had forgotten to bring some water and so with nobody around, I let Sooty off the lead for him to go down to the lake to have a drink. Cindy, was not really used to being off the lead but I went down with her to the lake and let her off to get a drink too.

Except before I had a chance to stop her she was in , swimming after a duck. She swam about 25 feet out, realised that the duck was too far away, turned around and saw how far I was away and started to swim back.
Of course she then seemed to panic a little and tried to swim on her back.I think she was weighed down by her heavy coat. Now of course I was really panicking inside but tried to remain calm and called her quietly. All these thoughts went through my mind:-
1. shall I plunge in but I don't swim too well and didn't know how deep it was.
2. If I went in I might drown
3. How would I ever tell my friend who breeds corgis that I had lost Cindy- this was more scary than the how deep is the water thought-

Sooty ,in the meantime was just sniffing around and was totally oblivious to the situation.

After what seemed like five days, Cindy came ashore.

I didn't tell my friend about it for 2 weeks but now she does laugh about it- about my reaction rather than Cindy's experience.

LOL - I can see poor Cindy on her back with little corgi legs in the air! Sounds similar to an "adventure" hubby and Emma had when she was a pup...

He had taken her on his bass boat to go fishing. She had never been on a boat b4 and seem to be loving it. He stopped the boat but was using the trolling motor to move it along. Emma decided to go for a walk and just stepped off the boat and into the water!!! He said he didn't know who looked more surprised - Him or Emma

Last summer we were fishing at the boat slips. Grass had grown up even with the slips (the lake was very low). Zip just walked out onto the grass and into the water he went. Scared him silly!

OMG...................

That would have scared me to death.... Poor Cindy...

This summer Hubby was in the pool cleaning it and Egan saw him go under water, jumped in after him before I could get over to grab him. I dont know who had the more shocked look on their face. Me or Egan when he bobbed back up.

Needless to say Egan hasnt jumped back in since.

I'm sorry about Cindy's swimming experience...maybe she'll figure it out and learn to love it! My Rhys loves to swim.

T-Gal: I had to giggle at your Emma story. Poor Emma, I can imagine it was scary - but the thought of her just walking off the boat is so slapstick.

Hi, Both Rusty and Redhead love the irrigation water and will swim in the ditch. Rusty has actually walked across the irrigation dam that is only about 2 inches thick and 3 feet long. Before any body panics, the ditch is fairly shallow and there is also a dam at the end of our property so they do not float away. I can't say the same for sheep, since we had a lamb float a long ways from the neighbors, and another neighbor found him. We still have 'Swimmer' in our flock, as he has a nice fleece. Susie will get in the water only to cross a fence so that she can be with us. She prefers to be lifted over the fence, but she'll do what she has to do. That shouldn't surprise anyone, since she is a Corgi.

Corgis are very good swimmers. Very good users of their short legs for paddling at 100 miles an hour, and are well balanced. And a confident Corgi can stop and look around which might make one think that they are tiring. But if your Corgi is overweight - then you're asking for trouble.

Dillon "swimming is not pretty..he snuffles and snorts like he is getting water up his nose when he clearly isn't (I watch. hubby is in the water with him, I hold the 30 ft long floatable leash/rope) His back end rolls this way and that and he looks terrified. Sadly we were hoping he would love to swim as we kayak and would love him to come (we already have a modification to do to our kayaks so the front bulk head would be a seat for Dillon...we will try next summer..he likes to go in to streams up to his lower chest only...deeper we have to carry him in...sad .

Most people that knew of my dog Riley, knew that she was part fish. I was looking at photos of her the other day and realized that about 80% were taken in water. She was absolutely crazy about swimming. She fell asleep twice in the lake waiting for me to throw stones for her to chase the splashes. More that once I had to roll up my pants legs and wade in to hook up her leash to make her come home.

Rupe loves the water too - even though his first experience was bad. We went to my neighbours pool where Riley had learned to swim. We walked in the backyard and just as I said "let me get Rupe's lifejacket on" he walked right off the edge and into the deepend. Right to the bottom he went! I jumped in and got him on the deck as fast as I could. He never would jump offthe side like Riley, but when I got in, he'd come over and climb into my arms. Mostly he liked floating around in a little dinghy while Riley and I swam!

Jemma was very good about the water this summer and is more apt to go in after a ball or toy rather than just a little swim like Rupe does. They both will sit in my surf kayak, but I think it's more that they're worried about me abandoning them than just coming for the fun of it!

I can just picture it right now. The look on the face of Cindy. I hope she is ok. She might have learned a lesson though. Which would be not to chase the duck in a pond.

We have been back several times and Cindy has not shown the slightest interest in ducks or the water. Over Christmas we went on our local beach and the tide was quite high but after a quick sniff of the sea water she moved on. I was prepared in case she decided to take a plunge.

Ace does not care for the swimming pool. He'll swim if we stick him in there but he will not willingly go in! However he just loves the beach. He'll run into the surf then run back out before he gets swallowed up by the water! Oh, and he absolutely loves mud puddles! He discovered them a few weeks back at a doggie park. I think Ace jumped or rolled in every single one!!!!

Oh Ace is so cute. I love seeing him in the puddle, but i wonder how much you loved having to give him a bath when he got home LOL! He really is a cutie-and looks happy sitting in that muddy puddle

Emilie, we were fortunate enough to go to a dog park that had a bathing station outside the fenced in area. That day because it was so muddy it was like being at a car wash. There were dogs and owners in line waiting to use the hose! It was quiet funny! We washed Ace as fast as we could (it was cold water and cold outside!). Anyway, I backed away from Ace as he began to shake off at the end and stepped right into a huge mud puddle myself! I almost fell backwards trying to get my balance! We were on vacation when this happened so needless to say, I had to go buy new shoes!!! And some more towels as well! But it was worth it...Ace had a great time - as you can see!

I wouldn't want my Corgi swimming in a pool that has been chemically treated. Dogs more than humans tend to swallow or lap up water they are swimming in.
