Do you remember.... - 02-13-2007, 12:30 AM

....your very first sight of your dog?

I remember seeing Rosie for the first time very clearly.

We had rung a breeder somewhat up-country, and he had a litter of three five-week old pups for viewing. I had never seen corgi pups at that stage and expected to see little red and white puppies running around.

To my complete surprise, there were three little, grey fluffy pups with tiny, short legs and the sweetest floppy ears!

One was quite a lot smaller than the other two and the breeder said that one was a runt and would not be used for breeding. I climbed over the low fence of their out-door pen and sat down on the grass. The two bigger pups ambled over, had a sniff of my hands and wandered off again. The littlest - a wee female, wombled over, climbed up into my lap, curled around and went to sleep.

I was totally entranced and quite over-come, so much so that I had to take great care not to break down. It was only four months after we had lost our beloved Mouse to cancer.

Somehow, I managed to ask the breeder if this puppy was available. She was and we made arrangements to return three weeks later to collect her. By that time, she had changed colour completely and her ears were pert and huge, sticking up and totally dominating her head.

That was over seven years ago but in my mind, I can see her now, just as if it were yesterday.

That was a very touching story; very sweet.

I definitely remember my very first sight of Trevor. We had been to see a new littler of corgi pups earlier, and, although they were cute as could be, there was just no chemistry with any of them. Then we went to see Trevor's breeder. We knew in advance that he was the last pup left in the litter, and that he was already five months old. Didn't know what to expect.

As we walked through the gate and into the yard, the cutest, happiest corgi pup in the world came racing up to us and started jumping up and down, then racing around in circles with his tongue hanging out and the biggest smile on his face. It was if he was saying "what took you guys so long to find me??!!!" Instant and complete love at first sight. I will never forget the sight of him racing up to meet us that day...

What a wonderful thread.. I will never forget my first sight of Dillon....I had known about when he was bred and was counting down the days to when he would be born, i got the call that he had been born, and was then counting the days when i could first see him...Finally the 6 week mark, I got to the breeder and she led me to where the pups were playing inside and out ( she had little doggie doors with ramps going down into a play area) I went outside, and there was Dillon and his two Fluffy brothers... the brothers were big balls of fluff, I know jessica woudl have melted to see these guys! ( i bet Jackie was the same way at that age, so darn cute like teddy bears!) Dillon was so quiet and sweet his head all cute and fuzzy and his little ears flopped, I picked him up and was holding him and he made little muffled grunts in my ear and i nearly melted! I just had to have him. I looked deep into his eyes and just felt an instant connection. She then told me that she might have to keep him to show and breed...but only time would tell.. Well thank GOD little dillon only had one descended testicle or I never would have gotten him.. In looking back I feel like we were just meant to be together and that one way or other we would..

I think I squealed! Squeal is not in my repertoir!

He (Tucker) was just so little and precious. Of course even at the ripe old age of 10 weeks he was ready to jump up and kiss a perfect stranger.

I had wanted a red female, after talking w/ the breeder sevreal times she suggested the tri male. I think I was still hoping to change her mind but one look at Tucker and it was all over!

Tell me he doesn't look like a toaster with a head!!!!!

this is a great thread!

I remember going to see Wicca's litter- I was actually supposed to get another GSD pup but the breeding didn't take and after deciding that perhaps it happened for a reason I started researching other breeds. I had been friends with Wicca's breeder and she phoned me up to say that she had the perfect pup for me.
The first time I saw her I knew she was the one Lore had chosen for me. All the puppies were in an xpen in the kitchen- roughhousing in a pile. And there was Wicca in the middle- beating the snot out of the biggest brother! We played with them for quite a while that night and in that short time frame Wicca had managed to eat half my shoe lace, rip two buttons off my friends blouse and steal my heart. I went back two weeks later to pick up my little devil....and she has been bad since day one----in a good way of course!!!

My first sight of Sam was quite different. My breeder had brought him to show me as she had just picked him up from a city pound about three hours away. I was working at the pet store at the time and she brought him in hanging on a tug toy. After prying the toy from his jaws he raced around happy as could be to meet all these new people. He left the store the same way he came in- in the air attached to the toy!

The first time I saw Riley she was a greyish-brown little creature with flopped ears like her two other sisters. I got pick of 3 girls and met them at 6 weeks old. The day I went back to pick her up, I remember yelling - "look she's a Corgi now!!!!" - her ears were up!

I had pick of three boys for Rupert and had been seeing photos of him and his brothers for 5 weeks before picking him up. The first photo I saw of him on the internet - didn't show his face, but yet I told a co-worker - look that's my boy! I wasn't totally sure which brother I would take when I left for Indianna because of their personalities. When we pulled up the drive, the breeder stepped out of the house with a newly bathed and fluffed up 9 week old tri-colour puppy under each arm! Rupert had been reported to be shy with people and a mommie's boy so I had some concerns. I lay on the gound and he climbed all over me - chewing and licking - that was it - he was mine!!!! Well worth the 18 hour drive there and back.

In the first photo I saw of Jemma, she had an expression that seemed so sad on her face and she was much older than I thought I wanted a dog at. I immediately emailed the breeder back and said no thank you. When convinced by many of you here I should consider an older pup, 7 months, I agreed to take Rupe and go meet her. The breeder opened Jemma's kennel door and this goofy, gangly little creature came flying out and started chasing butterflies and cavorting around the yard. When she realized there was a new person there, she came gamboling over and leapt into my lap and proceeded to lick me to death. That was it - we brought her home the next weekend.

You know what's funny? I remember the first time I saw Jackie AND the first time I saw Dillon! Mind you - it was the same day. I had also been waiting for my pup to be born. The breeder was breeding two of her girls close together. The first litter came - only 3 pups, not enough for me to have one. Two folks ahead of me on the list took the fluffs, and the breeder was going to (or so she thought ) keep the third. Then, in July, litter #2 was born . . . 5 pups this time. Only one problem though - by the time the breeder and the co-owner picked their pup, plus there were 2 other people on the waiting list, she was most likely only going to have 2 fluffy females to offer - and I had told her I wanted a R&W, regular coated male (although I also said I would take a fluff if that's how it worked out). We went to visit in August, when Jackie was 4 weeks old. At that point, we weren't sure which pup we would get, or even if we would be able to get one (Jackie wasn't a super-fluffy pup, so the breeder didn't decide for a LONG time whether or not she was going to give her up!). Anyway . . . she showed us the pen with the little fuzzballs (all puppies that age look like little fuzzballs to me), and pointed out the 2 girls that she thought were going to be fluffs. They were both cute, but Jackie was just so spunky that I fell in love with her. When we found out a month later that she definitely was a fluff , and that she was OURS, we were so excited!!! And the day we picked her up was such a happy day. She did look like a little teddy bear, and her ears were only halfway up, which was adorable (like wings). Below are pics of Jackie at 4 weeks (taking a much needed nap after bossing her littermates around), and when we took her home (9 weeks).

On that first day, we also saw a cute little R&W boy who turned out to be Dillon! He was the one that the breeder wanted to keep for herself from that first litter of 3 . . . but those who read Emilie's story know how that turned out!

And then Lulu....

I really didn't want 2 dogs but Tucker was just so lonely when he was at home w/o his buddies at day care. I knew my breeder had a 2nd litter of pups she co-bred with a friend and suspected they were all gone. I went to her web site and saw she had one female pup left.

There was Lulu, big white face and huge ears and I knew immedaitely the breeder would have a hard time finding a home for her since she sends most of her dogs to conformation homes. Lulu clearly wasn't breed standard.

I kind of hoped when I went to see her one of the beautiful merles from her earleir litter might still be available , but no.

I picked Lulu up, she looked at me with those big brown eyes, since it was nap time and all her brothers and sisters were settling down for a nap, she put her head on my shoulder and went to sleep.

She was so docile I was kind of worried. The breeder was right, her personality is a great fit w/ Tucker and that precious white face and forlorn brown eyes continue to break my heart on a daily basis.

When you look into Tucker's eyes, he's very self assured. Lulu, although far from helpless, looks so vulnerable. She will be bigger than Tuck but I suspect one look in her eyes and I will always think of her as a little waif. I think it's the black eyeliner under her esye on that white face.

I instantly fell for Zia! We went to the breeders house "just to look." Anyway, I held each of the puppies (of course they all were cute). This one little girl kept licking me as if to say "you are my new mommy." She also had the cutest face and personality of all of them. Hubby asked, "which one do you want?" I picked her. The night we went to get her, hubby asked if I'd even be able to pick her out. To his surprise, I picked her out immediately....from behind!

I didn't really get to pick Dudley. I had to answer a whole slew of questions about our lifestyle and personality and the breeder picked him for us. I was really hoping for a blue merle, but there was only one in the litter and she was keeping him. That left three brindles--the three amigos. One was going to be co-owned in hopes of becoming a show dog and Dudley came to me because of his snuggly, mellow personality, and because he was the first dog that my husband and I had had together as a family.
We drove the very long drive to pick him up and I will absolutely never forget when she pulled him backwards out of his crate! He was so many different colors and had the biggest ears and paws I had ever seen on such a little puppy. I instantly fell in love and couldn't wait to get him in the car and get him home. Unfortunately, Dudley was a bit carsick and showed his love for me by throwing up all over me repeatedly! Needless to say, it was a car ride I will never forget and I get to do it all over again in a few days when we go to pick up Maya...hopefully without the throw up!
