Unfortunately, Loki and Corrie can't learn the lesson. They ran and played in an area that was open to them - they do not have the ability to process that going out of the yard means getting hit by a car.

This is why we care for them, this was an accident, but the lesson is to fix the gate and then make sure everyone knows to shut the gate and to check to see it's shut before the dogs go out. This isn't meant to be judgemental by any means as you can see from some of us we've all potentially put our dogs in situations - not on purpose - that have put them in harms way. If you are counting on your dogs to learn from this, and know how to behave around cars, then they will run a serious risk of being hurt or killed.

Please let us know how Loki is doing.

That is what scares me about our fence is someone will forget and leave the gate open. I always tell people to shut the gate when they leave and then walk out with them or check as soon as they are gone. However, the gate has been left open a couple of times but thankfully my dogs were in the house. We just put up a new 4 ft chain link fence to keep ours in (Dale could walk through our old fence and did) We live about 440 ft off the road but I still worry. It is so hard to protect them all the time. Hopefully everything will be fine.

Have you though about maybe putting some sort of an auto-closing device on the gate? You might find some spring mechanism that would pull the gate closed if it is left open.

I used to haf a papillon when a few years back & my dad accidentally knocked her down....it was very sad, the papillon died & ever since then my whole family has this phorbia of our dogs running out to the parking lot or the roads. We keep them in the house when cars are coming in & we make sure they will run back when we shout their names. I always make sure that all visitors lock the gates.

One possible sign of internal bleeding is white gums.

That was the sign that caused Pepper's sister to be put down 3 months before Pepper died. Good stock - age 15.

Thanks again everyone. Happy to report that I took Loki to the vet over the weekend and he's perfectly fine. No injuries externally or internally. :sigh of relief: Lucky pup. Looks as if he'll be fine for his one year birthday next month. Nearly gave me a heart attack though.

Speaking of close scares, Rhys came out of his collar this morning and came about three feet from a moving car's front wheels! He thinks it's hilarious to run from me if he gets loose and he could have gotten hit! I'm just thankful that the driver was paying attention!

I took him inside and hugged him and told him that he was a bad boy and how upset Mommy would be if he got hurt. Then I put him in his kennel without his treat.

By the way, glad Loki is OK.
