Corgi Convert - 04-11-2007, 03:44 PM

We just got back from a road trip where we drove 900 miles to visit my mom in St. Louis and let her meet Owen as she is unable to travel. My mom had supported my daughter's campaign to get a dog (most of my family is dog crazy ), but she was surprised when we told her we were getting a Corgi. She never said outright, but I could tell she was not crazy about the breed. Our family growing up were diehard Golden folks.

Well, our visit changed all that. Owen was the perfect dog guest! He was deferential to my mom's very large Golden Retreiver (except when he was trying to steal Casey's food, but, hey, corgis will be corgis), was very affectionate to all, made everyone laugh, didn't mess up the house and only stole a few dirty socks. But he was so darned cute about it that no one minded. The dogs got on so well--I had promised my mom before we got Owen that I would take her dog if she was ever unable to care for him herself (she has had two strokes) and was so relieved that the two dogs enjoyed each other's company.

While walking in the nearby park (Tilles), we met a pair of cardigans and a pair of pembrokes! Anyone here?

Corgis and Goldens just GO together. Mine were wonderful for the 4 months that their lives overlapped.

A lot of members are very keen on meeting with other Corgis and you and Owen gets to see four in one outing. Pleased Owen was a typical Corgi and therefore a real gentleman, carrying the flag for promoting Corgis.

My two tend to be very good ambassadors of the breed. They make up for the jumping up by the wonderful smoochies they give total strangers.

Taylor gives any person a kiss or kisses 'on request.'

My husband is a dog convert after seeing two corgis. A year ago, he was totally against any dog, until the fateful day he came home and described a corgi. Now, only 7 months later we have two beautiful, corgi children (Huw & Haf) who have become the light in their daddy's eye. He would do anything for them. We have even had my mother-in-law do a complete 180 with regard to dogs because of our two corgis. She even buys them treats that stay at her house and dog toys just for them. If a corgi can't change a person's mind about loving a dog, no dog can.

Corgis can change the heart and mind of people. Today at the Retirement Village there was a new resident who I was told was very neutral about dogs. Well, Taylor, off leash, went up to the newcomer who was sitting down on a lounge chair, and got up onto his back legs and rested his front legs on her lap and gave the woman a kiss. That was the ultimate ice breaker. She is now on Taylor's list for future visits.

My husband was the same way Mocha. His thought of a dog was that they weren't good for anything unless you were hunting, and he didn't hunt. He finally gave in and let me have a dog. Give you 3 guesses who has Duncan spoiled so bad, and the first 2 won't count. Not only did he fall in love with Duncan, we ended up rescuing a corgi/chow mix, and now he has her so spoiled. It's that magical Corgi smile that wins them over every time!!!

Corgis have a charm that makes people fall in love with them! My mom is not a big pet person, but she sure fell for Milo. She doesn't let my sisters bring their dogs to her house, Milo is the only dog welcomed. She said it is because he is a little gentleman and such a good houseguest. (once he did urp on her carpet but she blamed my dad for giving him too much turkey).

My sisters are kind enough not to take offense. I think it's the corgi size that is appealing, they don't overwhelm. Milo rarely jumps on people, and if he does, it is because he wants to give them a corgi smooch.

Taylor has turned into a Milo and I am sure that Milo is typical Pem - a little reserved but can be self propelled to give a special welcome to certain people. Taylor though is forever charged to go up to children and adults at parks and other places and expect to be petted and fondled as he nudges close to them. And if he doesn't get the kind of response he is after, he will look up at these people with his big brown sparkling eyes which says your loss not mine.

Taylor is certainly a real sweetie and a very personable dog - if that is not an oxymoron - and at a second meeting, recognised me instantly, even if his master didn't.
