Shippo and His Cursed Toenail - 02-01-2008, 10:17 PM

Ugh. Well, I have to keep Shippo from running around for a couple days, because he obviously can't keep from opening up this wound he created, however small it may be.

Yesterday I was outside with Shippo and Eevee, and it had just snowed, so they were zooming around the yard rough-housing. A few minutes later, I noticed that the snow started start red, and ended up spotting where it was coming from. The bottom of one of Shippo's front toenails was bleeding everywhere! I thought, "No big deal," took him in, cleaned it off, put pressure on it for a bit, and then put him in his crate so his toenail had a chance to dry off. I thought that would be the end of it.

Today, I inspected Shippo's toenail and it looked fine! I couldn't find anything missing off it, so I figured it was just some sort of freak accident. We headed out the door to find the nearest dog park. When we got there, I let Shippo off, and he started running around, having a blast. We were only there for like 5-10 minutes, when one of the women said "Somebody's bleeding!" Sure enough, there were blood spots all over in the snow, which were quickly traced back to Shippo! So, our fun outing ended up being shortened, because I had to take him back home, clean him and his toenail, and put him in his crate till he was dry.

What a pain! I think when he was outside yesterday, he ripped a thin film off the bottom of his toenail where the quick is, so it's barely noticeable as an injury. It's going to be totally boring not being able to be active with him for days! I guess I'll have to think up some fun inside games till his toenail heals.

I've had a couple of rounds of Will breaking a nail or scratching a toe pad recently. Most often this happens when there is ice on the ground and he tries too hard to get traction. It also seems to happen about the time that he needs a nail grinding...Clean the nail/pad and make certain that there's no piece of nail hanging on that needs to be trimmed off. Good luck and expect a two or three days of favoring that foot/leg (If it was my toe, it'd be a week or two, luckily corgi's are tougher).

Poor Shippo, poor toe. Pickett has torn a toenail before, causing him to limp, bringing lots of pats. I'm about to go the dremel route to eliminating toenails, and am a bit nervous. Afraid of amputation, and he's short enough. haha. Good thing he's a R&W Pem, which means he has basically white toenails, making it safer. Any preferred brands? speeds? Tricks? sue in virginia

Poor Shippo! I'd probably try wrapping Charlie's paw with gauze to see if he could still run around without bleeding. Most likely though, he'd chew the gauze off, and be back to "bed rest".

Hopefully Shippo's toenail will heal fast and he can get back to Corgi play soon!
