First experience with snow -
02-19-2008, 10:53 PM
Ok, so my husbands job offered him a promotion in December. The catch...we would be moving from the only place I have ever known, Little Rock, AR to Joplin, MO. I was very excited until moving day come and the reality set in that I was now going to be over 4 hours away from my home, family and friends. My husband went the first week of January and me and the dogs went the last week of January. It NEVER, hardly ever snows in Little Rock. And, if it does, there is usually ice along with it. We (me and the dogs) have never experienced a "real" snow. Little did I know my whole mild winters world was about to get turned upside down. I always told my husband that I wanted to move somewhere where you get a real winter. The first snow was just a few days after our arrival. At first the girls did not want to go out. The terriers were shaking the snow off their paws with each step they took. It was really funny. Then I notice Lexi...she is rooting her nose in the snow and running around like crazy. She loves the snow! It has snowed often since that first time. The terriers are ok with it now, do their business and sit at the back door waiting to come in. And then you have Lexi, running around not wanting to come in. Last night she sat by the back door and was whining. I had just taken them out not too long before so I ignored her. After she was persistent, nudging my hand and going to the back door, I got up to let her out. I opened the door and it was snowing. She just ran out in the backyard and started playing. She really likes it when I toss snowballs in the air. She tries to catch them and then looks around all confused when they disappear. It's really cute! From what I recall, it was not supposed to snow last night. Weird thing... Everyone at home keeps asking if I am tired of the weather yet. I tell them I'm loving it!! They think I'm crazy.

Yeah-snow? I am offering over 60 inches of the white c**p for anyone who wants it. Eastern Iowa has had record storms including ice, sleet, freezing rain, heavy snow, light snow and ungodly windchills. I've been drifted in at home several times this year and was stupid and drove home from the show on Sunday-Des Moines to Cedar Rapids in 4.5 hours on I-80 considered-travel not advised.
Dogs on the other hand love it. Drifts are now hard so they can race through the "dunes" instead of falling through. They have race tracks all over the place and lie in wait for someone to run past so that they can attack. Here's some shots from the last couple of days:

Good note though with all the weather is that the show dogs have awesome thick coats ;0)

I'd love to have some of your snow...not the whole 60 inches though! LOL We have had a total of three days this "winter" where I woke up to the grass being a teeny bit frosty. If I didn't get up early, I'd have missed it, as it melted by mid-morning. We haven't even had any rain for a month until last Saturday. The only way I could convince Charlie to go potty in the rain was to walk out with him and hold an umbrella over his head.

lol. we've had three days of "frost" also, one day it stuck around, but I think it was only because the sun couldn't melt it cause it was way too cold! I'll put in a bid for 6 inches, please!

You Win! And as a bonus prize you also get windchills! Right now the current temp is a toasty -2, windchill of -20. Would you like daytime windchills or nighttime ones? It's going to be darn cold watching the lunar eclipse tonight.
But I digress, the dogs love the snow, my only dread is the aftermath-mud casused by 60 inches of snow.

Wow! I would like to experience the 60" of snow! Before my husband's job moved us, we were actually planning on moving to Jacksonville Beach, FL. It was when he told his job of our plans that they offered him the promotion. We just wanted out of Little Rock. Considering the money (and me wanting to experience life where there is a winter) we decided Joplin was a good move. We can always retire to FL. I always saw myself moving somewhere like Wisconsin or Minnesota then after some years there going someplace like Florida. I was a "sheltered" southern girl, not getting to experience much of anything. My husband on the other hand has traveled and experienced everything from being snowed-in in Nevada to Hurricanes in North Carolina. It was about 6 months after we had been dating that my husband started planning trips to get me out of Arkansas. I've seen more of the U.S. in the past 4 years than in my whole life. I insist on driving on all our trips so I can see everything! Don't get me wrong, Arkansas is a beautiful state, but there is so much more out there. Fogebotom-I would love to come spend a week with you! I still have my house in Little Rock if you want warmer weather
I will try to get some good pictures of the girls next time it snows. Possibly tomorrow per the weather guy. I am already looking forward to next winter!

I can sympathize with Cindy, we have the same situation here. We also have drifts the dogs can run on without sinking in. In some areas I can walk on them without sinking in. We have waist high drifts. The parking lots in Park City have piles of snow 10 feet high. And that's even though they're hauling snow out of the city in dump trucks.
So if Cindy is giving away snow, I'd like to do the same. Between the two of us, we've got plenty to go around.

GRASS?? Remind me what that looks like!!!!! Mine has a solid two feet on it where it's not got the 3 and 4 foot drifts!

Isn't that some sort of green stuff that covers the yard during the summer? I think I remember seeing some of that last September.
I think the only thing we will have in the next few months will be of a brown color and be tracked in by the bucket fulls from the dog's feet, tummies and tails.
This is just unreal. Blizzard this last weekend and just got word that the plow truck just went down our road to make one passable lane. Latest weather forecast calls for 4-6 inches Sunday/Monday.
Yippee!!!!

My wife that grew up in central Iowa laughs about the New England winters. "...This is not cold here..." I'm the tenderfoot that grew up in a mild Oregon climate.
