Corgi Convention New York City 2008 - 06-30-2008, 07:05 AM

Hi Folks,
I just wanted to share this with you all. Last Saturday there was a corgi convention in New York City this past Sunday. 51 Corgis gathered at the Boat basin in Riverside Park. Each dog performed a trick of their choosing (many of the tricks involved tennis balls). Awards were handed out to the best trick. A Welsh singer sang Welsh folk songs during the gala and for the encore all 51 corgis were connected to a contiguous leash making it into the Guinness Book of World Records for most amount of corgis tied to one leash! I hope you all enjoy the photos. They are located in the member gallery entitled "Corgi Convention New York City 2008"

That is very interesting indeed. I'm sure a large Corgi club in California could challenge that record.

Thanks for posting the photos and reporting on the day Matt. There were a couple of write ups about it on Corgi-L and the lady who was at the Corgi Aid booth posted some photos to their gallery. Looked like a great day, celebration of the breeds' heritage and for a good cause. Reports were they are planning on having the corgis back next year.

As for the most corgis on a leash, no need to go to California for that Michael. That record could be broken at a regular North Carolina picnic although I wouldn't make the suggestion. This was a special event and I wouldn't want anything to take away from it.

Hey Debbie,
That's right, they are planning on doing it again next year. So you better believe that Nick will be practicing his tricks! It was a great day and I have to say my favorite part of the day was after every speech when the humans started clapping, the dogs started barking.

As for the record... How does the old saying go "Records are made to be broken" Go get em North Carolina!

Yeah. records are made to be broken. What about 101 Corgis. Has a certain ring to it.

101 Corgis... that does have a nice ring to it. Although you'd have to be careful of where your stepping. That's a lot of corgis underfoot!

I learned about the Corgi Convention about a week before it happened, but had no transportation (I don't do NYC driving!). Oh, but I would've loved to have gone with Henderson! I enjoyed your pics - maybe next year we'll get there: sounds like it was a fun day!

The most Corgis I have seen in one place live was during the Corgi peak in New Zealand where upwards of 80 Corgis assembled at specialist Corgi cionformation shows or at Corgi ribbon (non champ) shows and around 60 at all breeds championship shows. In those days it was even a proud moment to get into the final lineup of an event or to take a minor placing. With fuel costs going up and up just lately, it is going to make it even more prohibitive for people to attend shows of this kind.

The most Pembrokes I have seen was at a National Specialty 10 years or so ago, the entry there was 300. National Specialty for Cardigans I attended, maybe close to 150 to 200. Our regional Pembroke specialty averages between 75 and 90 entries. In the US, most breed fanciers will give up some local shows to be able to attend the Specialties.

Maryann, I hear you about NYC driving I missed about a half hour of the festivities because I couldn't find a parking spot! Hopefully we'll see you there next year!

I wpuld love to see 200-300 Corgis assembled in one arena and perhaps all involved in a walk-past before the show start.
