Powder and Duchess - 11-27-2005, 03:45 AM

For the first three months I had Duchess, my female corgi, she chased Powder, the family cat. Powder spent all his time jumping from chair to chair to avoid the dog. But recently, Powder is the top animal and after a vicious fight that left Duchess with a scratch on her head, she keeps her distance from the cat. The dog and cat are only a few pounds difference in weight. And the cat is taller.
Now Duchess makes a show of chasing the cat occasionally, but there is no question that the cat is king, he teases the dog and lays in wait to antagonize.
If need be I will trim the cat's claws. Otherwise they are adjusting.

Hi Jane
If your cat and Duchess don't enjoy a harmonious relationship, I would seriously look at any means of neutralising the dangers your cat poses to Duchess. Having the sharp points of the cat's nails trimmed off seems reasonable considering that a Corgi's delicate eye can be permanently damaged from the claws of a cat.
Cats can be more clever, devious and dominant than dogs. I'd watch the situation very carefully if I were you.

I don't want the dog to have an unfair advantage that will make let her make the cat's life hell either. If they continue to fight I will have to do something like clip the cat's nails. I know it is risky but I reley on Corgies being smart.
