Deb, I am so sorry for your loss. You did an unselfish, incredibly painful (for you) thing to bring Riley peace. She was lucky to have you as a mom.
I am glad that you were able to have that last trip to the cottage before she passed, also. It was a chance to do the things she loved with the ones she loved. Rest well at the bridge, Riley.

Debbie,
I reread your post of the 14th with tears in my eyes again. My brother caught me sobbing when I first read it and I wanted to add something to the sympathy our Corgi family has expressed. Having had to make the decision to help some of my dogs and cats to end their suffering I know of the pain of being there when it has to be done. But I couldn't have left them "go it alone." Some people just can't stay with the animal, but they miss the peace and the closeure of those last minutes. With a heavy heart, I wish you better days. |

Thank you. I know it is a terribly scarey thing for people to think about being with their beloved pet as they pass from this place, but there is no greater gift we can give them. I have been honoured to be there for some of my cats in the past and it was difficult, but you are right, it is so very peaceful and the closure is very important. Rupert was with us and the vet said it would help him too. When it was over and it was time to leave Riley, Rupert went over to her and gently touched her leg with his nose and then quickly turned as if to say, it's over let's go now Mom.
He has been grieving and is very clingy and protective of me, but he is not looking for her, he knows she is gone. I am back to work today, so I hope the routine will help us both. I'm kinda weepy today as I have to keep telling everyone here what happened. It's all part of the process, and it will pass. Thanks, once again, for your kindness. Deb |

Deb,
Give Rupert a hug and kiss from me. I too, stayed with my Betsy when she had to be put to sleep in December and although it was one of the hardest things I had to do, I got to hold her and comfort her in the end.I was the one she was attached to most and it gave me a sense of peace and comfort knowing I was there for her. When my cat Sam was put to sleep last year, his companion cat of 12 years would look for him throughout the house, it was sad to watch. He would sniff in spots that Sam had layed when he was ill, turning in circles and then he would dart into different rooms as if to say "I can smell you, but where are you" I had read somewhere on a web site where it said it can help if the other dog sees that the other dog has passed - maybe it has helped Rupert somewhat. I am sure it must be hard for you to be a work today. linda |
