Celebration - 07-28-2006, 07:22 AM

Some wonderful neighbours of mine called me last week to say they wanted to do something in honour of Riley. I live in an apartment and they have a house with a big fenced in yard a block away. They are having a BBQ wake for Riley on Sunday afternoon to celebrate her life and the friends we all have because of her. We will raise a glass in honour of my little girl, but we will also be celebrating all of the dogs we have in our lives and the joy and love they bring to us.

I will be thinking of all of you then, for the support and kindness you have shown me and will raise a glass to all of you and your lovely dogs. If you think of it Sunday, please give your dogs a hug and let them know how much they mean to you. (You are most welcome to raise a glass too! )

Dear Deb,
The lump returned to my throat when I read this posting...What a wonderful idea and what a marvelous group of neighbors you must have!! Such a great way to honor Riley! I am sure she will be looking on with great interest - especially to see if any "tidbits" of BBQ happen to hit the lawn!! Be assured that a lot of dogs will be hugged and snuggled even more than usual on Sunday in Riley's memory!
Corgi love,
Margo (and ChloeLouise)

Deb,

I second that! What wonderful neighbors/friends you have to honor Riley this
way. You can all reminisce about all the great times you have had. Your posting also brought tears to my eyes because all too often, us owners do not have the needed support when our pets pass, and we are expected to "just go on" as if nothing happened.

Riley was obviously loved by a lot of people.

Deb:

That is so wonderful - I will be thinking of you as well as Linda and our little ones that we loved so much that have passed on. Linda is so right. Often we don't have the support and understanding that we need - People just don't understand and they are the ones that have suffered the biggest loss because they have never had the great love and companionship that we have experienced.

That is one of the nicest things I have heard in a long time. It is nice to know that good people are still out there and that Riley made such an impact on so many people.

Chips mom,

I had a couple close family members that never even acknowledged Betsy's passing; it was as if she had never existed, and that was very hurtful to me.

Just when you start to lose faith in people, you hear of stories like this and you realize that there are some wonderful people in the world. You are very lucky to have such wonderful neighbors. I will be thinking of Riley on Sunday and I'll try to score a couple of goals in my soccor game on Saturday for him. JR

Thanks everyone, I wanted to share this with you for that very reason - to let you know that there are some great people out there. I think evryone I know realized that Riley was a family member so they've all been respectful and kind - even my boss! The folks at my office gave me a card and on the front it says:
"Your dog was such an important part of your family"
That pretty much sums it up.

Hey J.R. I hope Riley inspires you and you score a couple of goals - soccer was her favourite game. The kids in the neighbourhood would play with her - they could not get the ball away from her. In fact, once in a park, she ran right into the middle of a game of teenagers and took the ball and ran! Everyone thought it was quite funny - thankfully!

That's awesome. In the past, when we've lost pets, we've had family and friends send pet sympathy cards. It's just so nice when others acknowledge taht your pet was/is part of the family. Here's to Riley! Glasses will be hoisted!
