Another scary situation this one with a cat-

Several weeks ago I was walking Ruby when she noticed a cat and she started getting into one of her frenzies. I moved over to the other side of the street and put Ruby on a short leash. All of a sudden the cat raises his hackles, growls and moves his claws and then starts to menacingly walk towards us. I yell to the owner who was outside to grab his cat but the guy just froze. I knew the cat was going to attack Ruby and having a bad back I did not want to lift 40 lb Ruby during a frenzy. When the cat got within 3 ft. I got my foot under the cat and kicked her about 5 ft in the air into a parked car and the cat got up and ran away. The owner after seeing this went into a craze and yelled "If I ever see you or your dog again I will shoot both of you." I realized I was dealing with a nut and just ignored him and walked away.

When I got home which was just around the block I was really pissed at the situation. I figured I had 3 alternatives- "forget all about" it but I discounted that as I didn't want to be paranoid in my own neighborhood, "call the police"- but it would be a he said she said and Ruby might act up in front to a strange cop and the third choice was "go back and confront the guy" and that is what I did.

When I came back he was still outside and I asked if his cat was OK and he said the cat was alright and everything is OK. I said everything is not OK as you threatened my life and that of my dog. He then stuck out his hand and introduced himself. So I shook his hand. He then said I did everything I could of done and he should have reacted when I yelled for him to get his cat. So we parted amicably, but I will never ever be friends with that guy.

If I had not kicked his cat away, Ruby would have been scratched very badly and his cat would have been biten pretty bad and I might have been hurt by interferring.

Quite a story...

Wow that is quite a story. So glad everything worked out ok. There sure are alot of nuts in this world. You called that guy's bluff, when you went back to talk to him - good approach and diplomatic.

Cardiguy,

You took the higher road; good choice on your part - but the guy sounds like a nut. You had Ruby on a leash so you did everything right. Sounds like the cat has some of the owners personality in him I at times, have encountered cats on our walks, but never one that posed any threat - that is not a cat that I would want as a pet.

Wow, Cardiguy, you're a better man than me. (Well, if I was one.) Good for you, I have a bad habit of letting something like that upset me and build up over time. I commend you for your diplomacy.

I agree with Jessica. Kudos to you, Cardiguy, for being a stand-up guy in a delicate situation.

The most danerous things about cats with regard to dogs - especially small dogs like Corgis - are that a cat's claws can so easily rip through a dog's eyes.

If an owner of cats or dogs cannot take instant action to prevent a confrontation from their pet, they shouldn't be allowed to own an animal.

If severe measures are required and are an absolute last resort, then one must take them to protect their own.

People say things at the heat of a moment that they regret and it takes a lot of character to forgive but if we can accept apologies, and respect and love our neighbours - then the world will be a better place.

Wow Cardiguy, I've had little ankle-biter dogs come tearing after us once during a walk ( and I was also prepared to "punt" them out of the way ) but never cats! Then there's their nutcase owner!

Glad everything turned out OK.

That whole "kicking the cat 5 ft in the air" thing... wish I'd seen that. Stuid cats! They are so moody & hissy. Sorry, I'm just not a cat person at all. I had a little chuckle when I read that part.

One time a neighbor's cat came into our fenced in yard and my dogs cornered her on the front porch. When I went out to see what the ruckus was, I grabbed the cat by the scruff of the neck and held it up away from my dogs. I made the mistake of loosening my grip to get a better hold and got bit severely on my hand. I screamed. dropped the cat, and Jasmine jumped a 40 inch fence and killled the poor cat. Thankfully, I saved my dogs eyes. I had a trip to the ER, 2 trips to the Dr. and got a bad infection in my hand. Also, had to send the cat for the rabies thing which wasn't pleasant and to top it off I had to tell my neighbor that my dog killed her cat. That was not a pleasant thing either but I would probably do it all again because that is the first reaction and all I wanted to do was put the cat back over the fence.

I know this is a corgi forum, but as a cat owner and lover, i really hate to hear how much joy it brings people to hear about cats being kicked or hurt. Anyone who really knows me knows that i do what it takes to protect my pets...my dog AND the cats, so if some dog or other animal were to violently attempt to attack my dog I would do what needed to be done to keep them away from my dog, however, I am not a big fan of having to hurt another animal and certainly would not be CHUCKLING about having a cat KICKED 5 feet in the air. Imagine if you would, your corgi running at someone, and having them kick your dog in the air, would that be funny? lets all try to be more sensitive to others feelings, people often have more than one kind of pet....

I don't want a cat in the least and neither do any of my family. They are bird killers and in fact spread much more disease than do dogs and create more problems - and they are largely uncontrollable. In fact cats are out of control - there are at least 85 million of them in the USA. But at a pinch, I would take one in if a little appealing, Corgi-friendly kitty came to my doorstep - like one did about 20 years ago and my two Corgis licked this creamy coloured kitty until he/she was pure white. And those Corgis were fun cat chasers. So I don't believe I would ever relish kicking a cat five feet into the air or doing any other cruel or un-necessary act unless there was no other choice in protecting my Corgi. I believe in respecting all animals that God gave us. Anyone cruel to an animal deserves to be locked up in a prison and never to be allowed to own an animal. Our prisons would be filled.

I know what you mean about protecting your pets. A couple of years ago one of my friends and I were home for lunch and my neighbor's dog, a german shepard mix, attacked Zip in our front yard. I got in the middle (ok, I know I'm not supposed to do that) but I felt like I needed to protect Zip. My neighbor came over to check on my dog. He asked my friend if Zip was okay. She said, "yes, but Kristi was bitten." He then reached down and touched Zip on the head and said, "I bet it was you that bit her. You like to start stuff, don't ya, boy?" Then he left. Boy, was I mad! I had to take off work a half day, go to the dr. 30 minutes away and get a tetnus (sp?) shot. Then a few months later that dog jumped on me and Zip again. My husband was so mad that I did not call the cops since it happened in our yard. My neighbors always let their dog out when we have our dogs out front. I do not go out front with my dogs unless my husband is outside with us.

I can't imagine if I am put in the same situation!! I will probably start chasing after the cat with my bag or anything if it dares to scratch Buta! I hate it when owners let their cats or dogs run wherever they like! It is so dangerous outside, they could easily be run over by cars or get into fights with our dogs!
